Restrictive cardiomyopathy, the rarest form of cardiomyopathy, is a condition in which the walls of the lower chambers of the heart (the ventricles) are abnormally rigid and lack the flexibility to expand as the ventricles fill with blood. Common symptoms are:
• Breathing problems that occur at night, with activity or when lying flat
• Fatigue and inability to exercise
• Loss of appetite
• Swelling of the abdomen
• Swelling of the feet and ankles
• Uneven or rapid pulse
HOW IS RESTRICTIVE CARDIOMYOPATHY DIAGNOSED?
Cardiologists may conduct a physical examination to check for enlarged or bulging veins, enlarged liver, lung crackles and fluid backup into hands and feet. Cardiac catheterization, chest CT scan, ECG and Echocardiogram are other diagnostic tests to confirm diagnosis of Restrictive Cardiomyopathy
HOW IS RESTRICTIVE CARDIOMYOPATHY TREATED?
The medications such as beta-blockers, that are prescribed for this disorder are usually those that could prevent heart failure. Lifestyle changes such as lowering sodium intake, that are advised could help relieve symptoms in patients with restrictive cardiomyopathy.
