Paramyotonia congenita is also referred to as paramyotonia congenita of von Eulenburg or Eulenburg disease and is one of rarely occurring forms of congenital autosomal dominant neuromuscular disorder. Common symptoms here include “paradoxical” myotonia that includes extreme weakness in the muscles. This weakness is accompanied with signs of clenching and fisting too.
HOW IS PARAMYOTONIA CONGENITA DIAGNOSED?
It is diagnosed by an electromyographic (EMG) examination. During this test fine needles are inserted into the muscle and the muscle’s electrical signals are recorded. The muscle is chilled for this test, as chilling brings on the myotonia. Evidence of myotonia supports the diagnosis of PMC.
HOW IS PARAMYOTONIA CONGENITA TREATED?
The treatment of the condition will be done with the help of care and management. Various kinds of physical and occupational therapy can help in keeping the muscle tensing bouts to a minimum. Also, with therapy, the patient can learn to make good use of whatever motion is left in those muscles.
