Esotropia is basically a kind of eye misalignment where on of the eye tends to be deviated inward or focussed towards the nose. It can happen between the two eyes also. The symptoms of the same vary and it is usually found in children. If the child constantly keeps suppressing the affected eye, they may develop amblyopia and adults may get diplopia. The treatment depends on the extent of the problem.
HOW IS ESOTROPIA DIAGNOSED?
A thorough examination by an ophthalmology expert will help in diagnosis along with fundus or retina examination, slit lamp exam and Cycloplegic refraction by dilating the eyes using certain specially made eye drops.
HOW IS ESOTROPIA TREATED?
The treatment of the condition will be done by prescribing bifocal glasses that can help in giving relief from the convergence of the eyes, by helping in straightening them. Eye drops and ointments can also help in giving relief, depending on the size and nature of the deviation.
DID YOU KNOW?
For proper treatment, the exact cause of the condition has to be identified. If the crossing of eyes either intermittently or constantly persists in an infant after six weeks, investigations are required.
