Menstrual cups are generally not so harmful but it comes up with a little risk and complications that may occur in rare cases. Minor symptoms include irritation that may happen for various reasons including - 1) inserting cup without using a proper lubricant, wearing cup of wrong size, and if the cup is not cleaned properly. It is recommended to read the manufacturer's guidelines before its use. 2) infection is one of the rare complications of using a menstrual cup. In the majority of cases, the infection travels from your hands to the menstrual cup and eventually to the body. Reduce such risks by washing your hands by warm water and using proper antibacterial soaps before touching the menstrual cup. 3) rare but the most serious complication of using menstrual cups is toxic shock syndrome (tss). This is a bacterial infection and it occurs when pre-existing bacteria (staphylococcus or streptococcus), that stays on your skin, nose, or mouth, is pushed deep inside your body.

Hello doctor. I am a 28 years old female and my doctor has advised me to use menstrual cups instead of sanitary pads....
Menstrual cups are safe to use and are generally not painful while you insert them. It is possible that you might have a little issue while inserting it initially, but once you are habitual, the process becomes smooth. Also, the majority of women don't even feel their cups once they are inside the vagina. This happens because these cups are made up of flexible silicone that matches the body temperature of a woman. Also, a menstrual cup avoids other conditions such as skin rashes or the burning sensation that generally occurs due to the use of pads.

I am sorry to hear about your concern but will be happy to assist you. It is better to avoid use of very old pads (more than 2 - 3 years and condition of packing) because it may contain some fungal growth. Sanitary pads are not supposed to be sterile like medical syringes etc, so if they have crossed the expiry date, they could be used. Let's connect over a call so that we can discuss your concern in details and make a suitable treatment plan for you.
