Uterine fibroid or leiomyoma or myoma is a benign tumor commonly found in the uterus.

It may either be seen within the endometrial cavity called "submucosal fibroid" or within uterine wall called "intramural fibroid" or protruding outside myometrial uterine muscles into an abdominal cavity called "subserous fibroid".

"Whether all the uterine fibroids are to be removed??" is the commonest question encountered in gynec clinic.

The answer is ''NO".

When to remove uterine fibroids?

1) If it is symptomatic. like in cases of excessive bleeding, excessive painful menstruation, inability to conceive (commonly in cases of submucosal, sometimes intramural varieties),etc..

2) When it is more than 5 cm in size.

3) When multiple fibroids are there causing symptoms.

4) In chronic anaemic patients as certain myomas lead to excessive menstrual blood loss.

5) In cases of degenerative large myomas.

6) In cases where the patient wants to conceive and it obstructs the reproductive conception tract.

When can we avoid surgery??

In cases of small isolated non-obstructive, nondegenerated or nonsymptomatic fibroids can be left without surgery. Certain nonsurgical medical treatments are available for that. Regular followup must be done to see the change in size or echogenicity of the tumour.
