Nurses are as much an important part of the healthcare system as doctors are. Their contribution to the ailing and disabled deserve much appreciation and applause. Not only do they provide patients with the utmost care and compassion, but also support their families and stand up on their behalf every single day. Their only goal is to ensure that you receive the best possible care today and to commit themselves to improve the quality of care in the days to come.

Here are a few ways how nurses make a huge impact on the well-being of patients –

  • They support your overall health - The role of nurses goes beyond monitoring the blood pressure, administering medications, and assisting the doctor. They are always around to support you, listen to you, and help you connect with various resources you might need – be it a support group to help you cope with a difficult diagnosis or a quiet moment together as you share your thoughts and worries. Such attention to detail and commitment on their part help patients recover mentally and physically and live a happier, peaceful life.

  • They care for you, as a family member would do - Nurses interact with patients and their families to gain complete knowledge of the health condition. They work relentlessly round-the-clock to help you manage the ailment effectively and prevent a relapse in the future. The ability of a nurse to provide care instructions for self-management and emphasizing their overall health can improve the patient’s quality of life.

  • They are the primary advocate of their patients - Nurses are often the first ones to meet and interact with the patients and educate them about the following steps to improved health and recovery. They are the ones in charge when the doctor is not around. On several occasions, the patient may have some queries or doubts regarding the course of the treatment. Nurses can be their voice and speak on behalf of the patient to send across the message to their superiors. Their job is to provide optimal care and assistance to promote recovery as part of the healthcare team.

The contribution of nurses to healthcare cannot, and should not be underestimated. These professional make a huge difference in the overall well-being of patients by assisting in basic treatment procedures, improving the mental and physical health of the patients, and even by lending a shoulder to grief when things get a bit tough.

We celebrate International Nurses’ Day on May 12, let us take a moment to recognize the hard work, compassion, and selfless love and affection that these professionals put into their job to make a positive impact on every patient’s life.
