Dislocated Shoulder - Are You At Risk?

Surprisingly, even though shoulder dislocation is most common in people who engage in sports, the greatest number of dislocations occurs inside the house. It is estimated that 47.7 percent of dislocations occur at home, either through accidental falls or through other unfortunate events. Comparatively, only 34.5 percent of shoulder dislocations occur at the sites of recreation and sports.

Sports, genetic predisposition and stress to the shoulder joint are risk factors for a shoulder dislocation. However, you are at the greatest risk of undergoing such an injury if you have dislocated your shoulder before. When the shoulder joint is set back in its place the first time, it stays in position under normal circumstances. However, even with a slight fall or injury, the shoulder joint may get dislocated again, at a later point of time.

Research indicates that people aged between 15 and 29 years are at the greatest risk of undergoing a shoulder dislocation. This may be because people of this age group are most likely to be engaged in a sports activity. Furthermore, the careless nature of people in their late teens or early 20s may be to blame for this group to suffer the most number of dislocations on their shoulders.

Around 70 percent of all shoulder dislocation occurs in males. The exact reason for it cannot be determined as of yet.
