What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is one of the most common diseases affecting a large percentage of older adults all across the globe. In simple terms, it refers to a condition where a person loses absolute control over his bladder which results in sudden urination at any place at any point of time. The condition is even more worse when a person undergoes a sudden jerk while coughing or sneezing. Urinary incontinence is much common to females than males. There is nothing to feel embarrassed about the urinary condition and seek medical help without any delay.

Also referred to as the overactive bladder or reflex incontinence, urge incontinence is the second most rampant symptom of urinary incontinence after stress incontinence. In this condition, there is a sudden and involuntary contraction of the muscular bladder wall which causes an urge to urinate. When the urge is there, the affected person is left with no time before he or she urinates. There are various ways in which the nerves present in the bladder can be stimulated to reduce incontinence, and you should consult your nephrologist about it.
People with damaged bladder are more likely to experience overflow incontinence.

People who have a damaged bladder or issues with their prostate gland or blockage in their urethra are more likely to experience overflow incontinence. This also happens when the prostate gland has become very large for obstructing the bladder. The bladder fails to hold the amount of urine that the body is making or cannot empty it completely, leading to urinary leakage.
Tip: People suffering from overflow incontinence should use the bathroom frequently or use adult diapers.
Functional incontinence is mainly caused by underlying physical or mental issues of the patient.

An individual affected by functional incontinence understands the need to urinate, but they fail to make it to the washroom owing to mobility issues. There can be an underlying disorder which acts as the primary cause of functional incontinence including dementia, confusion, poor eyesight, anxiety, and depression. This type of incontinence is very common among elderly people, and it is important to treat the cause to reduce the incontinence level.
