It is advisable to avoid foods that have a high salt content for a few days prior to and during your period. The sodium in salt leads to water retention in the body which causes bloating and adds to the pain and discomfort of your period. Similarly, foods that contain caffeine should also be avoided as they are also known to add to pain experienced during menstruation.

It is not always the contractions of the uterus which causes pain during menstruation. In many cases, disorders in the reproductive organs can lead to extremely painful period cramps. This is known as secondary dysmenorrhea and is caused by underlying health conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, stenosis of the cervix, polycystic ovarian syndrome, etc. Sometimes there might be a growth of fibroids on the inner wall of the uterus which may also lead to pain during menstruation.

Studies have shown that oral contraceptives can reduce the amount of pain experienced during menstruation. Women who are on birth control pills are known to have less painful period cramps. However, there have also been cases of certain unfavourable side -effects being caused by the intake of birth control pills. Taking oral contraceptives should be avoided without consulting a physician first.

Exercising regularly allows the body to release endorphins which have a pain-relieving effect. Women who exercise regularly do indeed experience less painful periods. It is advisable to exercise especially when you are on your period since that is when your body needs endorphins the most. Aerobic exercises such as cardio workouts, as well as stretching exercises such as yoga are good for releasing endorphins. Even an orgasm can induce your body to release endorphins.
