Open adrenalectomy is preferred over laparoscopic adrenalectomy because in the former procedure the surgeon can have a clear and prominent view of the affected gland to be removed.

Laparoscopic procedure of adrenal gland removal is more common because it has a lower risk of infection and heals faster than open surgery. The procedure involves only making small incisions in the abdomen to detach the adrenal gland from the blood vessels and surrounding tissues. Thereafter, it is taken out of the abdominal cavity in a bag that is inserted by the surgeon while performing the surgery. The procedure is carried out by inserting a small camera also in the abdomen.
The type of adrenalectomy to be performed is decided based on the size of the tumour.

An open adrenalectomy is done if the adrenal tumour is especially large in size. The surgeon detaches the enlarged adrenal gland from the blood vessels and the surrounding tissues. The blood vessels are tied off so that excess blood is not lost. The adrenal gland is then taken out of the abdominal cavity and the space is rinsed with a saline solution. Thereafter, the incisions are stitched. In case of small tumours, laparoscopic surgery will be apt because it is minimally invasive and requires very less recovery time. The risk of infection is also very low in laparoscopic surgery.
After both the adrenal glands are removed which hormone supplements are given for lifetime?
3 of 5
After removal of the adrenal glands, regular supplements of hormones cortisone and hydrocortisone are required to be taken by the patient. Both the hormones are released by the adrenal glands and are responsible for several crucial functions of the body like inflammation, allergies, blood problems, vision problems, multiple sclerosis and a few more. These hormones basically works on the immune system and hence, there supplements are a necessity after adrenalectomy of both the adrenal glands.
What complications can be expected after an open adrenalectomy?

Pulmonary or lung problems may occur if open surgery is done with thoracoabdominal approach. In this approach the incision is made in the abdomen and the chest. Since, the chest portion is subjected to the open surgery the lungs may get affected and breathing problems may arise as a result of complication of the surgery.
Palpitations can be a cause of adrenal tumour.

Heart palpitations are one of the primary symptoms of pheochromocytoma. Pheochromocytoma disease is a one that is caused due to tumour on the medulla of adrenal gland. This causes the adrenal gland to produce excess quantity of adrenaline or noradrenalin. The disease is usually benign and if left untreated can cause severe cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure. The treatment for pheochromocytoma normally involves surgical removal of the tumours that returns the blood pressure to its normal range.
