Almost always, an appendicitis episode leads to removal of the appendix. When a patient presents with an infection, it is often with severe pain and therefore in the acute state. Before the operation, the patient is given a round of antibiotics and pain control to control the infection and pain. Getting the pain, nausea, and infection under control is the first line of treatment before surgery can be done.

The pain that a patient suffers from when he has appendicitis is quite unique and diagnostic. The pain is sharp, shooting, and very intense. Most people find it unbearable and require intravenous pain killers to get it under control before the further diagnosis can be done. The doctor will be immediately able to diagnose appendicitis even before diagnostic tests are done based on the pain.
