D&C - Understanding The Process!

Dilation and curettage process is a surgical procedure that dilates the cervix in the uterus to scrape off the uterus lining. Sometimes, it is also known as a minor test to whether your uterus needs to be removed or not. Consult at least two to three specialists before you get a D&C performed on yourself since some women are very sensitive to any sort of procedure that are done to their uterus.

No incisions are supposed to be made while you undergo this procedure. All you have to do is lie back while the doctor inserts a speculum into the vaginal area. Holding the uterus with the help of a clamp makes it easier for the insertion. Always make sure that no skin samples are being taken by the doctor r no cuts are being made. See that sterile instruments are being used in order to perform the procedure.

You might experience all of the above-mentioned complications after you undergo a D&C procedure. Sometimes, blood vessels tend to get damaged during the procedure. This can cause bleeding post the D&C. sometimes, the instrument inserted can hit you cervix by accident. This causes an injury to the cervix that can worsen if not taken care of properly. If non-sterile instruments are used or the procedure is performed in unhygienic conditions, it can cause infections. Make sure that you are in a sterile place where sterile instruments are being used. Make sure you get proper anesthesia so that you are not able to move your body while the D&C is being performed.

Almost all D&C procedures are performed under general anesthesia. This is so because the procedure is very short. The patient does not have to sit around for the anesthesia to wear off since it can be easily reversed right after the doctor is done performing the D&C. it is highly rare that any patient might require just local anesthesia. Make sure that in case you are being given local anesthesia, you ask the doctor for a solid reason for why you are not being given general anesthesia. Also, make sure that you do not eat anything hours before your procedure.
