Why do you need a D&C?

A D&C is performed to remove the tissues in the uterus right after you have had a miscarriage or have gotten an abortion. This helps in preventing the heavy bleeding that might be caused by the same. It also helps diagnose when a woman is going through abnormal bleeding. It can also be used in treating problems like fibroids. Almost all D&C procedures are performed under general anesthesia. This is so because the procedure is very short. The patient does not have to sit around for the anesthesia to wear off since it can be easily reversed right after the doctor is done performing the D&C. it is highly rare that any patient might require just local anesthesia. Make sure that in case you are being given local anesthesia, you ask the doctor for a solid reason for why you are not being given general anesthesia. Also, make sure that you do not eat anything hours before your procedure.
