What are the most common symptoms of ichthyosis vulgaris?

Ichthyosis is a keratin disorder. The keratin is the hard layer on the skin, especially on the palms, feet, and back. The most characteristic symptom is the appearance of dry, white scales which can be all over the body, especially in the hands and legs and back. The condition begins in childhood and continues through life. The hair follicles may develop rough bumps known as keratosis pilaris. If severe, the scales can even bleed and get infected. Ichthyosis can be managed by improving hydration, as dryness is the main issue. Keeping the skin moisturized can help in preventing cracks and infections.
What causes ichthyosis vulgaris?

Ichthyosis, also known as fish scale disease, given that the skin appears like fish scales, is caused by a faulty gene. This is also hereditary in nature. It usually starts in early life by 3 years of age, continues to manifest, and then disappear in teenagers. In very rare cases, it can be associated with other medical conditions like kidney failure, thyroid disorder, etc. Keratosis pilaris and eczema need to be excluded before confirming the diagnosis of ichthyosis vulgaris.
What are some common treatment options for ichthyosis vulgaris?

There is no complete cure for ichthyosis vulgaris. Management involves controlling symptoms and preventing side effects. The affected part, usually the arms and legs, should be soaked in warm water daily twice to reduce dryness. The area should be adequately moisturized with products that contain hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, petroleum jelly, etc., to keep it well-hydrated. To ensure the condition is under good control, constant medical check-ups are also recommended. When you think the scales are going to bleed or crack, seek medical attention and not just limit to routine therapy.

There is no specific treatment yet for ichthyosis vulgaris. Treatment involves management of the affected parts by warm soaks to soften the skin, improved use of moisturizer, and peeling off the softened skin with abrasive sponge or pumice stone. In most cases, the condition sets in by 3 years of age and disappears by the early be confusion adolescent years. Ichthyosis can be adequately managed by roper moisturization of the skin.

Once the condition is diagnosed, then the patient should be able to manage on his own by the use of warm soaks, moisturizers, and hydration. However, if one experiences bleeding, it is advised to use the moisturizer at least twice-a-day, then the person should seek medical attention. This will help curtail the issue and address the overall health of the patient. Most ichthyosis cases can be self-managed with improved moisturization and only requires medical treatment when there is infection or bleeding in the cracks.
