For good sleep, just try out these simple ways - 1. Stick to a sleep schedule- Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try to limit the difference in your sleep schedule on weeknights and weekends to no more than one hour. Being consistent reinforces your body's sleep-wake cycle. If you don't fall asleep within about 20 minutes, leave your bedroom and do something relaxing. Read or listen to soothing music. Go back to bed when you're tired. Repeat as needed. 2. Pay attention to what you eat and drink - Don't go to bed hungry or stuffed. In particular, avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime. Your discomfort might keep you up. Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol deserve caution, too. 3. Create a restful environment - Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting screens just before bedtime. Consider using room-darkening shades, earplugs, a fan or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs. Doing calming activities before bedtime, such as taking a bath or using relaxation techniques, might promote better sleep. 4. Limit daytime naps - Long daytime naps can interfere with nighttime sleep. If you choose to nap, limit yourself to up to 30 minutes and avoid doing so late in the day. 5. Include physical activity in your daily routine - Regular physical activity can promote better sleep 6. Manage worries - Try to resolve your worries or concerns before bedtime. Stress management might help. Start with the basics, such as getting organized, setting priorities and delegating tasks. Meditation also can ease anxiety. Identifying and treating any underlying causes can help you get the better sleep you deserve. If above things doesn't help you, then consult us for homeopathic medicines.

Dear Lybrateuser, - For your optimum function & alertness after a hectic day you require at least 7-8 hrs of sleep in the night, less sleep will cause lethargy, tiredness & difficulty to concentrate for a long time - if you sleep less then to freshen you you can take a short nap for 10 - 15 min whenever you find that you are not able to concentrate properly & feeling sleepy or lethargic - also to remain alert for long periods you have to have a well balanced diet with more of fruits, vegetables & whole grains, have plenty of oral fluids including 7-8 glasses of water for proper hydration as even mild dehydration will make you feel tired - also include 10 min of exercise in the morning or any other part of the day as it greatly helps in boosting our metabolism & hence energy supply to the body - destress by listening to music or take a walk in the open fresh air or any other activity which will freshen you up - keep intake of tea, coffee to the minimum 2-3 cups per day) as can cause acidity - napping for 5-10 min is not a disease it can refresh your brain & you will be able to concentrate better.

Diabetes & Depression - Its A Vicious Circle!

Diabetes & Depression - Its A Vicious Circle!

Diabetes is a state where the body suffers from lack of energy due to poor metabolic state. This is construed as depression in many patients as they already feel lethargic and subdued. The fatigued state of body in diabetes can be alleviated by exercise which raises endorphins - substances which are released in the body especially by exercise - providing us the necessary elation so much necessary for our recovery

Managing diabetes may make a person feel alone and set apart from their friends and family due to the number of dietary restrictions they need to follow. Additionally, if the person has trouble controlling their blood sugar level, it may make him frustrated and anxious. Over time, these negative emotions can build up into depression.

Depression can make a person lose his sense of purpose and can make regular tasks feel like too much to handle. Thus, a depressed person may stop taking care of himself. The lack of energy can lead to a loss of appetite or unhealthy snacking. This can trigger fluctuations in blood sugar levels that worsen diabetes.

Thus, depression and diabetes have a cyclic relationship. The good news is that these two diseases can be treated together and managing one of these diseases can have a positive effect on the other as well.

Here are a few ways to treat diabetes and depression:

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise is very beneficial towards treating, both depression and diabetes. Exercise helps regulate blood sugar levels and hence can help control diabetes. It also helps in reducing excess weight, which can enhance your self image and make you feel happier. Simultaneously, it also releases endorphins or the 'feel good' brain chemical. This can help alleviate depression symptoms.

A Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is essential for good health and can help manage, both these disorders. Along with a balanced diet, there is also a need to abstain from snacking between meals. Reducing the amount of sugar in your meals helps stabilize blood sugar level and control fluctuations. Stable blood sugar level keep a person from becoming increasingly anxious and can thus prevent depression.

Restful Sleep

A good night's sleep can treat, both diabetes and depression. If you have proper sleep, you will awake feeling refreshed and energetic. This positive energy balances the negativity of depression, lowers the urge to snack and helps in stabilizing blood sugar level.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy or in particular cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven beneficial towards treating depression. This in turn gives a person the motivation needed to manage his diabetes as well. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Skin Care For Every Age

Skin Care For Every Age

For every stage of life!

It’s a bit cliché to say you want to grow old gracefully. The truth is that no woman really wants their skin to sag or get wrinkles. Here’s how to retain elasticity and protect your skin from damage. With a little luck and a lot of planning and prevention, you can stay youthful for decades.

In your skincare routine you should…

Use sunscreen religiously

Make sunscreen an important part of your routine to protect your skin from premature aging, uneven skin tone, dark spots, freckles.
Using sun protection lotions with atleast spf 30 daily will help your skin in the long term.

Gentle cleansers

Use cleansers at least 2-3 times a day to keep your skin oil free clear out the dirt & debris.

Moisturising

Use water based moisturisers if you have oily skin and cream based for dry skin types. We often tend to neglect moisturising routine if we have oily skin type but we should understand that oil moisture are different things! moisture is hydration which forms a protective barrier in our skin.

In your 40s you should…

Use retinoids

Retinoids have become the new age skin care essentials. Retinoid refers to a derivative of vitamin a, a vitamin that is proven to boost collagen production, soften fine lines and winkles, and minimizes pores. Vitamin a can upregulate skin cell turnover, meaning that your skin will renew itself more often.

This produces softer, smoother, and more radiant skin. Dark spots start to fade.
Ideally, whatever formulation you choose will contain at least 1 percent retinol, which is the highest allowed in a non-prescription cream.
Consider roc retinol correxion deep wrinkle serum.

You will notice that you’re more sensitive to the sun, so you should either minimize exposure during the initial two week period or wear sunscreen, clothes that protect you from uva and a hat.

Your skin may start to dry out during use. This is normal. Flaking and peeling is also normal. This will pass and, when it does, your skill will look amazing. Once you’ve achieved the results you want, you can discontinue use.
Your doctor can guide you best on use of these creams.

Exfoliate at least once a week

Consider use of alpha-hydroxy acid twice a week. This will boost exfoliation, making your skin brighter and smoother. If you already have problems with dry skin, choose an aha formulation with lactic acid or other moisturizing agents in it.

Consider hydroquinone

The next step beyond exfoliation is hydroquinone. It’s not for everyone, but it can make a difference for some. This substance inhibits melanin production, which is a good way to fade out skin blotchiness.

Be cautious to use it without prescription, your doctor will best guide you for its use. The maximum amount of time you should use the product is 3 months. Beyond that time, you should switch to kojic acid or licorice extract.

In your 50s you should…

Switch cleansers

As you grow older, it gets harder and harder to maintain moisture levels in your skin. So, oil-stripping cleansers and gels should be replaced with moisturizing agents. Hydrating creams will help prevent the natural drying that’s caused by skin cleansers, but it can also help with the side-effects of using retinoids.

Switch retinoids

One thing you’ll notice from retinoid use is that it’s incredibly drying. After a while, your face will feel like a desert. It’s time to switch to moisturising night creams if you aren’t already using them.

Consider eye cream

Lastly, consider using eye cream for maintenance to lighten, lift, and refresh your under eyes. Sometimes, that’s the best option.

In your 60s you should…

Minimize facial cleansing

Every facial cleanser out there can dry and irritate the skin. Even creamy cleansers can do this due to various drying agents used in them.
Minimize use of cleansers to twice a day.

Use more moisturizers

This is where things get tricky. You need to start using formulas with a high concentration of natural oils which will moisturize your skin. If at all possible, stick with natural oils rather than petroleum-based ones.

Formulations like vitamin c serum to help with moisturizing while also keeping cell turnover up so that you can extend your youthful appearance.

Benefits and Uses of Chamomile Tea

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai

Benefits and uses of chamomile tea

Most of the people have benefitted greatly from chamomile tea, so let’s take a closer look at some of its benefits and uses that impressed them.

1. Skin care

Due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich nature of chamomile tea, it is not exclusively used as a beverage. You can topically apply warm or cold chamomile tea to the site of irritations or skin conditions, such as eczema. Research has shown that this sort of direct application can significantly improve healing and lessen the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles on the face. Eliminating oxidative stress and boosting the immune response in these areas can do wonders for your skin.

2. Boosts immune system

If you want to strengthen your immune system to ward off infections, chamomile tea is the answer. There is a certain amount of phenolic compound in chamomile tea that is specifically linked to fighting bacterial infections in the body. Studies have shown that 5-6 glasses of this tea over a course of two weeks can significantly improve the body’s ability to fight infections.

3. Relieves menstrual discomfort

The anti-inflammatory nature of chamomile tea makes this relaxant a popular choice for women dealing with the symptoms of menstruation like bloating, cramping, anxiety, sweating, inability to sleep, and mood swings. Chamomile tea can directly affect many of these symptoms by soothing the mind and body, and reducing inflammation that may be causing discomforts.

4. Relieves stress

One of the most popular uses of a cup of chamomile tea is in the stress and anxiety treatment. After a long day at work, the warm, soothing nature of this beverage can help to increase the levels of serotonin and melatonin in your body. These levels can successfully eliminate stress and worry, while also slowing down your mind and eliminating the classic symptoms of anxiety. 1-2 cups of chamomile tea per day can do a significant help against chronic stress. Again, while pregnancy can be a stressful time, it can cause an increased risk of miscarriage.

5. Induces sleep

In a similar way that chamomile tea can ease stress and worry, it can also be an overall sleep aid, particularly for people who struggle with restless, non-restful or rejuvenating sleep. Even those struggling with sleep apnea and other disorders may benefit from the effects of chamomile tea. Drinking a warm cup of non-caffeinated chamomile tea can help you fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more refreshed.

6. Manages diabetes

Research has shown that chamomile tea can be useful for people suffering from diabetes. By helping to lower blood sugar levels and regulating the amount of insulin in the blood, the powerful organic chemicals in it help to eliminate massive drops and spikes in blood sugar.

7. Treats stomach issues

If you are suffering from stomach irritation, ranging anywhere from mild bloating to ibs symptoms, chamomile tea can be a major help. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help to ease the twisting nature of your gut and allow for the passage of gas and smoother bowel movements. A single mug of chamomile tea can make you feel better, but continuous use of this can help to prevent serious conditions from developing in your gut.

8. Hair care

Apart from all of the impressive attributes of chamomile tea, many users claim that it improves the appearance and strength of the hair. While the anti-inflammatory components can help to alleviate irritation on the scalp, the stronger chemicals can fortify the strands of your hair, eliminate dandruff, and generally give your hair a better, silkier look.

Menopause - How You Can Manage It Naturally?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Ahmedabad

Menopause is one of the most significant transitions in the life of a woman. While it is a natural process, it often entails a lot of discomfort and re-adjustment. A woman’s body undergoes a lot of hormonal changes, it is therefore essential to maintain a healthy sociological and physiological ambience around the woman to minimize the distress that can potentially arise in times like these. During menopausal changes, the body tends to amass a lot of impurities.

Ayurveda recommends specific diet plans and lifestyle decisions to ease out the transition. Ayurvedic methods are aimed at reducing the enormous emotional stress that a woman is likely to endure during these times. Some of the practices that can mitigate the anxiety caused by menopause have been enlisted below:

  1. Balanced Diet: Having the necessary nutrients in the rightful quantity is extremely necessary to soothe the menopause induced agitations and trauma. Ayurveda recommends that you avoid food items that trigger off indigestion problems. Extremely salty and sour foods as well as spicy and oily foods can prove to be detrimental for you during menopause. Dressings and condiments like ketchup and mustard are known to not resonate well with the digestive system when your body is undergoing hormonal changes. Ideally, you must follow an astringent diet. Food items which are sweet and bitter to taste have benefiting properties. Wheat based foods as well as sweetened dairy products are extremely favorable. You may also look at leafy vegetables for purifying the system from within and acting as a rich source of protein. One of the most foremost guidelines to follow during menopause is the increased intake of water.

  2. Lifestyle Choices: To facilitate an easy transition of the bodily systems, you need to advocate certain conscious lifestyle changes as well. It is important to adapt to a healthier way of living so as to avert any physiological consequence of menopause. You need to get sufficient amount of sleep in the course of a day. Sleep rejuvenates and refreshes the body for a healthy mechanism and provides the requisite amount of rest. Hot oil massages can also prove therapeutic during menopause and palliate pains and irritations that are likely to occur in such times. A timely intake of the meals is yet another mandatory routine that you must follow to battle the menopausal discomforts. Finally, Ayurveda recommends regular exercising for leading a happy and healthy life ahead.
