Lybrate-user, if a person has confirmed diabetes and is on treatment, then stopping the treatment is not advisable. The sugar level mentioned (130 to 150 mg) is which one? fasting or pp? because once drug treatment is stopped blood sugar can increase disproportionately. Get his hba1c% checked, it has to aoround 6 to be free from diabetes. (5.9 to 6.4 % is prediabetes, >6.5 % is diabetes).

Dear, glimepiride is a sulfonylurea and the other drug is a combination of metformin and sitagliptin. The three drugs have different mode of aciton. Glimepiride and sitapliptin increases the secretion of insulin from the pancreas whereas metformin acts by increasing insulin sensitivity on the tissue sites as well as suppressing glucose generation by the liver. Having said that all these drugs have some or the other side effect. The management of diabetes is trifold, diet, exercise and drugs. Kin...more

Dear lybrate-user,
considering your height and weight your bmi looks ok. A fbs (fasting blood sugar) 135 mg% is not prediabetic. It falls in category of diabetes. Never rely only on fbs. Please check plbs (post lunchbs) and three months average hba1c at the onset of treatment. Istamet can't prevent or reverse diabetes.

Dear lybrate-user, I understand your worries. Your requirements for medicine is a bit higher for your age and duration of diabetes. Tired or exhausted pancreas unable to secrete insulin in optimum amount along with mental stress and physical inactivity may be contributing to such high sugars. You need to become physically very active, regular with healthy food habits and if possible learn some kind of stress management techniques like aol i. E art of living or vipassana. Also follow up with diab...more

Mr. Lybrate-user, it is very incorrect to have stopped treatment on your own. Now if you want to restart the same, then it is essential to have detailed diabetes profile done, like fasting, pp and hba1c%, based on those details drug selection and dosage can be decided. Plus you are having grade 1 obesity with a bmi of 34.6 kgs, that it self is a major contributor for high blood sugar. Please get your bp and lipid profile also checked. Thanks.

Mr p k mishra, istamet is a good combination in treating t2 diabetes, provided it is bringing your sugar levels to desired values. The combination is as safe as any other oral anti diabetic drug. And about being perfect, well there is no drug which is perfect except probably insulin injections. If your disease is well controlled and hba1c % is around 6.5% then you should continue the same. Along with this exercise and restricted diet are equally important and not to be over looked.
