Candid 1% Dusting Powder

Manufacturer: Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd
Medicine composition: Clotrimazole
Prescription vs.OTC: Prescription by Doctor required

Candid 1% Dusting Powder is an anti-fungal medication used to treat vaginal and skin yeast or fungal infections, rashes, oral thrush, athlete’s foot, jock itch, ring worm etc. It can be either taken orally as a medicine or can be applied as an ointment to the skin.

Candid 1% Dusting Powder prevents yeast and fungi to produce ergosterol, an essential component to form their cell membrane. It causes holes to develop on the cells and result in cell contents to leak, thereby weakening the cell membrane and finally leading to death of the micro-organism.

I have white spots on my face. Is it better to use candid ointment??
Is there any better ointment than that?
Hello, if you are getting relief then you can continue using it but this is a temporary solution to your problem. White patches on your skin are a common type of depigmented skin lesion associated with an infection, allergy, or autoimmune disorder. One common cause of white spots, or hypopigmentation, is a fungal infection of the skin known as tinea versicolor (associated with other symptoms, such as itching or dryness on or around the white patches). This fungal infection is not contagious and can be treated easily with over-the-counter medications. Please tell me other symptoms like about sensation on the area, since how long do you have this patch, any family history of white patch, etc. In the mean time you can take cal phos 6x, 4 tabs twice daily. Do send me a clear photo of the affected area.

Are You The Right Candidate For IVF?

Are You The Right Candidate For IVF?

One of the major milestones in a woman’s life is the entry into motherhood. For most women, when this does not happen in the natural logical sequence of things, there is anxiety and lot of pressure from family and friends.

However, with advancements now, there are options like intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilisation (IUI and IVF) available, which can help increase the chances of conception and pregnancy. IVF is where the egg is retrieved from the woman’s womb, fertilised externally and then transplanted back into the uterus where it grows to full term. However, there are always unanswered questions like how long to wait before going for IVF, is it the right procedure for me, etc.

Read on to know to find answers to some of these.

    1. Maternal age: As a woman reaches 35 and a man reaches 40, the fertility rates drop significantly. The chances that a woman at 35 will conceive is about 20%, which goes down to 5% if the woman is 40. However, this rate can be significantly increased by using IVF. The quality of the egg would gradually deteriorate, and so if a woman is nearing 40, it is better to consider IVF as the ovarian reserve would be optimal with IVF.
    2. Failed intrauterine insemination: In couples who have problems with the sperm reaching the uterus, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is first attempted. However, if 3 or more attempts of fail, it is time to consider IVF.
    3. Duration of inability to conceive: While some couples conceive quite promptly in a month or two, most take about 6 to 8 months of unprotected sex to conceive. Therefore, IVF can be an option if you are failing to conceive even after a year. Less than a year, don’t fret. Take it easy and it might just do the trick.
    4. Medical health: Both the partner’s medical health should be taken into account. Lifestyle changes like smoking, alcohol abuse, drug abuse should be considered, which can account for poor sexual performance and therefore lead to an inability to conceive. Health conditions like diabetes and heart disease can also lead to infertility. Hypothyroidism in women is another thing that must be ruled out, as it often leads to an inability to conceive.
    5. Sexual problems with the partner: One of the first things to do before going for IVF is to check that the male does not have any issues. Be it erection issues or ejaculation issues or sperm issues, they need to be ruled out. Sperm quality, quantity, and motility have to be analysed, and if they are optimal, IVF can be considered.

Glycolic Peel - Are You The Right Candidate?

Gycolic peels can significantly improve the appearance of the skin. This is a type of treatment that involves applying a chemical solution that makes the skin blister followed by peeling it off. The new skin that generates is less wrinkled and smoother. This treatment can successfully reduce lines under the mouth and the eyes, treat acne, improve scars, treat skin damaged by sun burn and wrinkles, improve the look and feel of the skin. It must be noted that the skin becomes very sensitive after a gycolic peel treatment. It, therefore, makes sense to wear sunscreen and refrain from direct exposure to UV rays.

Who is an ideal candidate for a gycolic peel?
Both fair-skin and dark-skinned people are suited for this treatment. The success rate and the effectiveness of this treatment depend on the condition for which a candidate being treated for. People with extremely dark complexion may not be well suited for this treatment.

    How to get started?
Before going ahead with the treatment, it makes sense to discuss any underlying condition with the dermatologist. A history of cold sores and scarring should be discussed. If a person is undergoing any medication, it should be informed to the doctor prior to the treatment. A dermatologist often stops other medicine and prescribe skin meds such as Retin-A, Renova etc. to prepare the skin for the treatment. Furthermore, certain antiviral and antibiotic medicine can be prescribed to treat the certain underlying condition before resuming the treatment. An open discussion with the doctor about the depth of the peel is necessary to set the expectation straight.

    How is the procedure performed?
Gycolic peel is an outpatient procedure. An overnight stay at the hospital is not necessary. The skin is thoroughly cleaned. The skin is then applied with a solution such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, carbolic acid etc to a very limited area of the skin. It results in a controlled wound and the new skin fill up the wound within hours. A burning sensation can be felt for a span of 10 minutes followed by a sensation of stinging. A doctor might prescribe pain medication and suggest cool compressor to reduce the uneasiness.

What to expect after the procedure?
A sunburn-like reaction is witnessed after the procedure. This is followed by scaling that lasts for about a week. Peels can be repeated within weeks to get the exact look a person seeks. The procedure might result in crust, blister, and patches. The area is bandaged after the procedure is performed. Sunlight needs to be strictly avoided since the new skin very fragile and sensitive to the powerful rays of the sun.

Are You The Right Candidate For Hair Transplant?

MBBS, Diploma In Dermatology, PGDMC (Post Graduate Dip. In Medical Cosmetology)
    Dermatologist, Hyderabad
Are You The Right Candidate For Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant is usually opted for by people who are experiencing balding. In this procedure hair follicles are taken from one part of your body which has abundant hair and it is then placed on your scalp where you are experiencing balding. The site from where the hair is taken is called the donor site, hair transplant can be used to fill eyelashes, chest hair and pubic hair.

    Benefits of Hair Transplant:

As you age, your hair starts to fall off especially from the center of your head. Men experience baldness faster than women. Hair transplantation helps to fill hair in your scalp and reverses time. You will start looking younger. It has no side effects whatsoever.

Some men start experiencing thinning of hair as soon as they start aging. Chest hair is considered a sign of masculinity and strength in some cultures and societies. Studies show that 85% women prefer chest hair on their partners. Therefore, hair transplant done for chest hair will make you look more masculine.

The hair which gets implanted onto your scalp will start to grow normally from your scalp. Hence, it is just a one-time procedure. After your hair transplant surgery ends, you need not worry or stress about your balding scalp. The growth of the hair will not be stunted. The time taken for your new hair to grow will be the same as your natural hair growth.

The procedure can be done by means of partial anesthesia. In case, you are scared of anesthesia leading to unconsciousness, partial anesthesia is also widely prevalent for the performance of this procedure.

    Procedure of Hair Transplantation:

In this procedure, the surgeon cleans the scalp of your head and then injects anesthesia so that your scalp can become numb and you don’t feel a thing. There are two methods used in this procedure, follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS). In follicular strip surgery (FUSS), the surgeon usually removes 6 or 10 inches of skin from the back of your head. Since the back of your head has more hair in comparison to the top part of your scalp. He, then, sews that area of the scalp. The area is usually hidden due to dense hair in that region. In follicular unit extraction (FUE) surgery the surgeon generally removes hair follicles one by one from the back of your scalp and inserts them in the desired area where you want hair.

    Recovery:

After the surgery, it is important to take medications because your scalp can be very tender. By two to three weeks the transplanted hair will start to fall after which you may experience normal hair growth. Recovery period can vary from two to five days.

Who Is Not The Right Candidate For Liver Transplant Surgery?

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, FRCS (edinburgh), MD - R & D, FRCS Intercollegiate
    Liver Transplant Surgeon, Bangalore
Who Is Not The Right Candidate For Liver Transplant Surgery?

The liver has a significant role to play in metabolism and digestion. The failure of a liver can lead to significant health issues. There are some causes for liver failure, which cannot be treated with medications. In these people, a transplant, which is replacing the diseased or injured liver with another liver, is the only definitive treatment option.

Some conditions which can require a liver transplant are:

    Types of transplant:

    • Living donor transplant: In some patients, partial liver can be removed from a close family member and transplanted into the affected individual. The liver is known for its regeneration ability, and over time, will grow in the recipient.
    • Cadaveric transplant: Immediately after death, a liver can be removed and transplanted.

While the concept of a transplant sounds quite convincing and appealing for those with a severe liver disease, it is also important to note that not all would qualify for a liver transplant. The conditions which would disqualify a recipient are discussed below:

    • Significant heart disease: Those with severe coronary artery disease, valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, and cardiomyopathy are not candidates for a liver transplant.
    • Severe lung disease: Those with poor lung perfusion do not qualify for a liver transplant.
    • Advanced age: Greater the age, lesser the survival rates. So, people aged more than 70 are usually not considered for a transplant.
    • Obesity: A person with a BMI of more than 35 is often not a good candidate for a transplant. The overall health should be managed in these people.
    • Malnutrition: On the other extreme, severely malnourished individuals are also not considered for a transplant.
    • HIV infection: A person who is HIV-infected does not qualify for a liver transplant.
    • Substance abuse: Anyone who is actively abusing alcohol and/or substances is definitely removed from the list for a transplant.
    • Metastasis: If a patient is looking for a liver transplant due to hepatic cancer, it is essential that the cancer is contained. If it has spread to various parts, then containing it would be difficult, and a transplant may not succeed.
    • Multisystem organ failure: Other than heart and lungs, even people with poor renal function are not ideal candidates for a liver transplant.

A detailed liver recipient evaluation assessing the severity of liver disease, chances of survival, and overall health are done before a person is listed for liver transplant. This evaluation ensures a better success rate with the transplant.
