X-Ray Sialogram (Bilateral) Test

X-Ray Sialogram (Bilateral) Test

An electromagnetic radiation also known as X-Radiation, primarily used to diagnose causes of pain, tracking progression of underlying diseases and also to determine the effectiveness of treatment. In order to check the blocked salivary gland or duct in the mouth a sialogram test is performed. The salivary gland tumors are pretty rare and the region of concern is the parotid gland. The growth of the tumor happens gradually as the gland tends to increase in shape and size. The procedure uses x rays as a method for testing cases and is known as Ptyalogram.

In case you have incurred any of the following, please inform your doctor before proceeding for the test If you are suffering from an iodine allergy, a medication is generally required in order to prevent an allergy. In case of women’s, please inform if you are pregnant.

If an over to counter prescription is being followed please bring this to the attention of the doctor by the earliest. A sedative might be prescribed by the doctor and it will not be possible for the patient to drive himself, hence a transportation arrangement is advised.

A sialogram is usually performed in order to check for the blockages in the ducts of salivary gland but
it can also be used but a sialogram may also be referred following any of these symptoms
Face pain
Swelled Jaw
Discomfort while opening the mouth
Constant foul smell.

The sialogram test is generally performed in the radiology department of the hospital/clinic and is an outpatient procedure. The procedure can be protracted if the opening of the duct is not easily located.

A sterilizing mouth wash in order to kill the bacteria is performed and depending on the calmness of the patient the level of sedatives used might vary. An X-ray is performed which goes on to show if there is a blockage in the duct through stones which prevents the material in reaching the glands through ducts. The material is injected into the gland through the catheter which creates pressure in the gland and this causes some discomfort hence, remaining calm is advised. An all-round view of the gland is required in order to gain perspective and holding of the breath will help in analyzing the X-ray better.

Average price range of the test is between Rs.1000 to Rs.4000 depending on the factors of city, quality and availablity.
