MRI is a procedure to get the dimensional images by using the radio and magnetic waves. To take an MRI, a radio wave is beamed in a strong magnetic field. An approximate time of 30-35 mins is taken for the images of the tissues to be captured and transferred to the computer. It creates a 3D image of the internal structure which gives an upper hand to the test for the better and clear view of the suspected injury or disease. At times contrasting agents or dyes are given either orally or through intravenous injections to get more clear images.
The MRI scans doesn’t bar you from eating or drinking water before the test In fact, it is prescribed to drink plenty of water a day before the test to keep your body hydrated during the test. If you have claustrophobia, you must inform your doctor before the examination so that proper precaution/measures can be taken before the examination. Patients having pacemaker, pregnancy, ear implants, brain surgery with the aneurysm clips and metal shrapnel in eyes might not be allowed to have an MRI
It is important for you to lie still throughout the entire MRI scan so that the image may not be distorted. Loud knocking sounds can be heard by you during the process. Hence, earplugs will be given to you. You will be positioned in the supine position with your feet pointing towards the magnet. Your body will be positioned over the spine coil and then the body coils will be placed over the thighs and it will be securely tightened through straps. The laser beam localizer will be centered over your mid-thigh. Finally, you are placed inside the machine for the scan.
