Intrinsic Factor IgG Antibody Test

Intrinsic Factor IgG Antibody Test

also known as: Anti Intrinsic Factor, Intrinsic Factor Blocking Antibody, IF Blocking, Type 1 Intrinsic Factor Antibody

Intrinsic factor antibodies means the proteins produced by the immune system that are associated with pernicious anemia. This laboratory test helps in identification of intrinsic factor antibody (IgG antibody) circulating in blood in human body. Intrinsic factor means protein in human body produced by a type of specialized cells that can be found in line the stomach wall called parietal cells. The deficiency of intrinsic factor can result in the malabsorption of vitamin B12 and subsequently anemia. Autoantibodies are also formed directly countering the parietal cells which identically results in inadequate intrinsic factor activity and vitamin B12 lacking.

There are no certain preparations required for this laboratory test. The doctor will inform the patient if any certain preparations are required for conducting this test. On the day of the test, it may help to have child patient wear a T-shirt or short-sleeved shirt to allow easier access for the doctor who will be performing the test.

IgG test resulting generally doesn’t indicate the particular type or origin of an infection. A more detailed testing will be required as a follow up to abnormal results. An IgG test can be conducted when an individual is suffering from frequent infections to check if he has a condition which is impairing their immune system.

A health professional will generally take the blood from the vein. For a baby or young children, the blood can be collected by puncturing the heel with a small needle (lancet). If the blood is being taken from a vein, the skin is cleaned with antiseptic, and an elastic band (tourniquet) is placed around the upper arm to apply pressure and cause the veins to swell with blood. A needle is putted into a vein (usually in the arm inside of the elbow or on the back of the hand) and blood is inhibited and composed in a vial or syringe. After the procedure, the elastic band is removed. Once the blood has been composed, the needle is taken out of the body and the area is protected with cotton or a bandage to stop the bleeding. Composing blood for the test will only take 5-10 minutes. The blood sample will be handled by a machine. The results are generally disclosed within a 2 days. If results are not positive, the doctor is likely to suggest and perform further tests.
