APT Test for Newborn Test

APT Test for Newborn Test

APT test in the newborn is done when there is blood in the stool or vomit of the newborn baby. It may be due to different reasons, and the reason is based on the color of blood change after the test. If there is vaginal bleeding in the late pregnancy then is such cases APT test is done. Moreover, to check certain conditions like vasa previa and fetal-maternal hemorrhage, the APT test is done. But the only symptom that leads to the test is the presence of blood in the stool of the newborn.

Although there is no particular preparation is required before the test. The baby should eat/drink usually, and the sample should be taken near the lab. However, the concerned doctor should know if there is any medical condition or medicine are being given to the baby. It helps in knowing the accurate result and take the further steps. For taking a vomit sample, no further preparations are needed. However, in the case of stool, the lid of the tube or the cup in which the sample is taken should be closed immediately. The sample should be taken to the lap within 30 minutes for the test.

The APT test helps in knowing the reason behind the blood in the baby’s stool or vomit. It can be the mother’s blood, or it can be the child’s based on the result of the test. Negative: If the color changes to yellow or brown that means that it is mother’s blood. It means that the child is not suffering from any illness. Positive: If the color changes to pink that means it is baby’s blood and more tests are required for the further treatment. For a child or a newborn who is already weak and sick, you should not rely only on the APT test, instead, go for further tests and treatments when blood is regularly appearing in the stool.

It is a hemoglobin test in which the change of color will decide if it is the mother’s blood or the baby’s. It is also known as alkaline denaturation test for fetal Hgb determination. Mix the 1 part of stool with the 5 parts of water. Centrifuge the mixture. Add 5 ml of pink colored supernatant and 1 ml of 0.25N NaOH. Wait for 5 minutes to get the exact result in the form of color change.
