Amylase (Pleural Fluid) Test

Amylase (Pleural Fluid) Test

Amylase is a kind of enzyme found in the pleural fluid between the lungs and the chest cavity. It is a special enzyme produced by the pancreas for the purpose of food breakdown in the cells. When there is damage or a kind of inflammation in the pancreas, then there is excessive production of this enzyme. The Amylase test is used to detect this problem. It evaluates the problems in the pancreas and diagnoses any issues in the oesophagus as well. It is conducted as a routine blood and urine test. The results are measured at the laboratory.

Some key things to remember for preparing for this test are: You should not consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test. You should not eat anything at least 2 hours before the test. You need to drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration before the urine test. Consult the doctor regarding the daily dose of medicines that you take. The doctor will suggest you to avoid taking any medicines that can interfere with the test results.

The Amylase blood test detects the elevated production of amylase in the pleural fluid. It informs you of the pancreatic disorders in the body. These disorders can range from a normal inflammation to pancreatic cancer. The test gives the following information: Infections in the gallbladder such as cholecystitis Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract known as gastroenteritis Presence of peptic ulcers Blockages in the intestines Infections related to salivary glands

The blood test involves tying an elastic band at your upper arm for stopping the blood flow. A skin area is cleaned and a needle is inserted into the vein. Once the blood is drawn out, the area is cleaned and bandaged. For the 24-hour urine test, you have to start with an empty bladder and collect a sample of urine. You have to keep collecting a sample throughout the 24 hours and note down the time for each sample.
