Allergy - Maize Test

also known as: Allergy Maize Enzyme Assay

Maize allergy is one of the rarest allergies, but it can have the most irritating symptoms as well. For some people, this allergy is usual with not so severe symptoms, but for some, it can even lead to asthma. The common symptoms of maize allergy are tingling or itchiness in the mouth, hives or rash, headache, swelling of lips, tongue, throat, face, or other parts of the body, difficulty breathing, with wheezing or nasal congestion, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting and digestive problems like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Thus if you are taking corn, then the doctor will suggest the allergy test when you have these symptoms.

There are no special preparations required before the test. You are not required to fast or stop your usual diet plan. However, Consultation plays an important role that may alter the results of the test. Hence you are required to see the doctor before the test. All you need to do is tell the doctor about the different symptoms occurring and follow the instructions given by the doctor before the test. On the day of the test, one should wear comfortable clothing so that it is easy for the doctor to take the blood sample.

As stated above the blood sample is collected to detect the presence of IgE antibodies against the
allergen.
1. The test will be reported to be negative or normal when there are no antibodies present in
the blood.
2. The test will be positive when there are IgE antibodies present in the blood. The value of the
antibodies may vary from lab to lab. However most of the time they are higher than
100kU/l.
Once the allergy is detected, the doctor will start the treatment. However, since it is a food allergy,
so one should avoid eating maize for good health.

For the Allergy maize test, the radio Immunoabsorbent method is used on the blood sample to
detect the presence of IgE antibodies in the blood.
1. The skin and the needle are cleaned using alcohol.
2. An elastic band is wrapped above the elbow so that the veins can be easily seen.
3. The needle is injected into the skin near your elbow and blood is collected in the tube
attached to the needle.
4. The needle is ejected from the skin, and the blood sample with your name is sent to the
laboratory for analysis in the sealed tube.
