Diagnosis of malaria involves identification of malaria parasite or its antigens/products in the blood of the patient. Even though this seems easy, the efficacy of the diagnosis is subject to many factors. Thin smears let one to identify malaria species counting the diagnosis of mixed infections, quantify parasitemia, and assess for the presence of schizonts, gametocytes, and malarial pigment in neutrophils and monocytes. The peripheral blood smear provides complete data on the species, the stages, and the density of parasitemia.

MP Smear is done using Smear method on a Blood sample. The microscopic tests comprise staining and direct visualization of the parasite under the microscope. The minuscule image of the parasite on the wide and blood smears has been the recognized technique for the diagnosis of malaria in most settings, from the laboratory to the field study. The careful examination of a well-prepared and well-stained blood film currently remains the standard for malaria diagnosis. The majority usually used microscopic tests include the peripheral smear study and the Quantitative Buffy Coat (QBC) test.
