Cysticercosis is a state of severe infection caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm taenia solium. If any particular individual consumes food or water filled with tapeworm eggs of such kind, then chances are there that he/she might get affected by such a disease. It can often make the patient epileptic throughout the lifetime. In many cases, the larval stage of the tapeworm affects the central nervous system. It has been found that a Cysticercosis-Antibody-Taenia- Solium is referred to those patients who are suffering from frequent seizures.
The test just involves the collection of a sample of stool from the patient. Hence, there are no special instructions that are required to be followed by the patients. They are just required to collect a sample of their stool. But, they should also take note of the fact that the stool has to be collected in the morning. Also, it should be the first time of the day. The patients must do well to inform the doctor about the past medical history, or if he/ she is allergic to any kind of medication. They should also inform them if they are under any kind of medical treatment at the time of the test. The doctors, on the other hand, will take the final decision on the basis of the statements given by the patients. Sometimes lumbar puncture, X-Ray, C.T, M.R.I are also recommended if the report from stool testing is not clear. No such tests require any kind of special preparations.
The determination of Taenia-Solium is based primarily on the presence of gravid proglottids At least seven to twelve uterine branches may be found in the stools. The test provide the doctors with a clear idea about the extent of damage that has already been done by the aforementioned worm. It also helps them to know more about the future outcomes of such a damage. The detailed report enables the doctor to undertake the future course of treatment and also to mend the damages that have already been caused.
The test is mainly done by following the ELISA or EITB method, or sometimes both. If stool testing is recommended, then the patient is just advised to collect a sample of stool in a glass container. It is then labelled with the name of the patient on it and is then sent to the laboratory for testing.
In cases of X-Ray, C.T, or M.R.I - the patient is just made to sit or lie idly, and then the images are obtained using the machines. The test is mainly done by following the ELISA or EITB method, or sometimes both.
