The H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) is back to haunt us this season. Therefore, here are some of the most important preventive measures to avoid contracting the illness. Instead of fear, here are some very important yet simple tips to prevent this infection.

The first and most important step in preventing swine flu is vaccination. You can call the local health authorities and enquire about vaccination kits.
The second line of defense is to take antiviral medications within 2 days of getting fever.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue whenever you sneeze or have a running nose. Remember this prevents the dispersal of the virus through minute aerosols. Throw the tissue in to a trash can with a lid.
Wash your hands with soap and water. If they are not available, an alcohol based hand-rub solution will suffice. Remember, even though you haven?t been exposed to aerosols, there may be a virus present on the surfaces of objects which are infective for 2 hours after their deposition.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Most germs spread this way.
Avoid close contact with patients who have swine flu.
If you know anyone who has swine flu, urge them to stay home and self-isolate for a period of 24 hours after the fever has subsided (except of course to visit a doctor).
If you find yourself sick with symptoms suggestive of swine flu, take the antiviral medication promptly.
Use a facemask if you know of a member in the family or at work who currently has swine flu.
Keep yourself well hydrated daily with 8-10 glasses of water. This flushes out all the toxins from the system and allows good moisture and mucous production in the sinuses.
