BENCID
- Bencid’s generic name is Probenecid, and its main function is to increase the discharge of uric acid. The main symptoms for which Bencid is recommended are problems like gout or gouty arthritis. The drug is sold in 500 mg tablets. People with ulcers and stones in their kidney should avoid this drug. The known side effects include headache and dizziness. Consumption of fluids is recommended while taking this medication.
Uses
- Probenecid reduces high levels of uric acid in the body and prevents and treats gout and gouty arthritis (pain and inflammation of small joints due to deposition of uric acid in the joints). Though, it can’t treat an acute attack of gout. It can also be used in combination with antibiotics like penicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin etc. to extend their effect during infection.
Side Effects
- Joint pain, dizziness, redness, nausea, anorexia, headache, vomiting, swelling
Expert Advice
- Intake of probenecid is not advised if you are already consuming salicylates like aspirin. When you are on the probenecid therapy, you might also get prescribed colchicine or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAID, pain killer) to prevent severe gouty attacks during the first 6 to 12 months. Consult your doctor before starting the course of this medicine if you ever had or still have kidney stones, any kind of kidney disorder, ulcers in the stomach and small intestine, diabetes, severe liver disorders, blood disorders or glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Talk to your doctor if you have scheduled a surgery in which anesthetics will be used. If you are planning a pregnancy or if you are already pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s highly recommended to consult a doctor before starting this medicine. High precautions should be taken while driving or while operating machines while consuming this medicine as it might cause dizziness.
How it works?
- Probenecid belongs to uricosuric agent’s class of medications and works by blocking the reabsorption (entry from urine back into the blood) of urates by the kidneys thus, increasing the excretion of uric acid and preventing deposition of urate crystals in the joints. It prevents the elimination (excretion from blood into the urine) of certain antibiotics like penicillin by the kidneys hence, delaying its excretion and increasing concentration in the blood.
