ARCHITOL
- A vitamin D analogue, this drug is used to treat osteomalacia, hypocalcaemia, renal osteodystrophy, hypoparathyroidism and hypophosphataemia. It is a useful drug for people facing kidney problems. It is available in injection form of 600000 i.u./ml and 30000 i.u./ml. Side effects include renal and CV damage, hyperphosphataemia or hypercalcaemia, ectopic calcification and hypercalciuria. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are advised to take the dose with caution.

Vitamin d deficiency historically has been defined as a blood level of 25hydroxyvitamind below 25nmol/l. There is scientific debate about the optimal vitamin d blood level.
