Diabetes Proves Deadly for Smokers

While it is well known that smoking causes lung cancer, heavy smokers with diabetes are also at increased risk of death from causes other than lung cancer, according to a study being presented next week at the annual meeting of the radiological society of north america (rsna).

Diabetes is a chronic illness in which there are high levels of glucose in the blood. More than 29 million people in the u. S. Have diabetes, up from the previous estimate of 26 million in 2010, according to a report released by the centers for disease control and prevention. One in four people with diabetes doesn't know he or she has it. Having diabetes can also put people at risk for numerous other health complications.

To determine the extent to which diabetes is associated with deaths from lung cancer, other cancers, and other causes among heavy smokers, researchers examined the risk for all-cause mortality among people with and without diabetes within the national lung screening trial (nlst), a massive, multicenter trial that compared low-dose helical ct with chest x-ray for early detection of lung cancer in current and former heavy smokers.

" in our study, we found a statistically significant link between diabetes and all-cause deaths, non-lung cancer deaths and lung cancer deaths in women" said kavita garg, m. D, professor of radiology from the university of colorado -- denver.

For the study, Dr. Garg and colleagues looked at data from 53, 454 participants in the nlst and identified 5, 174 participants who reported having diabetes at screening.

They conducted an analysis of the relative risk for overall mortality, lung cancer mortality, and non-lung cancer mortality associated with diabetes, adjusting for age, gender, body mass index (bmi), and pack-years of smoking. Over the course of the study, there were 3, 936 total deaths, including 1, 021 from lung cancer and 826 from cancers not of the lung.

Participants with diabetes tended to be older, reported more pack-years of smoking, and had a higher bmi than those without diabetes. There were 650 deaths (12.6 percent of patients) among participants with diabetes and 3, 286 deaths (6.8 percent of patients) among participants without diabetes.

" we found that diabetes doubles the risk for all-cause mortality and non-lung cancer mortality among heavy smokers" Dr. Garg said" we also found that women with diabetes have an increased risk of lung-cancer mortality, but did not find the same effect in men"

The researchers continue to analyze data in an effort to better understand the underlying cause. In the meantime, Dr. Garg emphasizes the importance of taking control of diabetes and undergoing lung cancer screening if you're a smoker.

" patients have to take care of their diabetes to maximize the benefit of ct screening for lung cancer" she said" it truly makes a magnitude of difference in mortality risk"

Dear Rajesh, If such a food is available, the doctors will be recommending it all over the world instead of creating awareness of depression and spending lots of money on developing new antidepressant tablets. However, whatever is recommended for heart's health is also advised for depression, like omega 3 rich food (oily fish, flax seeds). Tryptophan rich food like banana is also advised. The dose of them is highly impractical for anyone to consume.

Tremors, feeling anxious or nervous, sense of panic, sweating, increased heartbeat, feeling of impending doom, stomach discomfort, dizziness etc are signs of anxiety. These can be debilitating. If the anxiety us overwhelming, consult a psychiatrist at the earliest. With the right medication and counseling, it is likely your symptoms will improve. Other than that, try yoga, deep breathing, meditation, moderate exercise, progressive muscular relaxation and guided meditation. Please do not experiment with medicines. This is not something you can do on your own, based on what you have heard. Do not take any medications on your own without the approval of your treating doctor. The side effects of mixing medications can be life threatening and often fatal.

Respected Sir, The numerous symptoms that you have mentioned could be due to the stress of your studies and exams. However they could also be due to various other medical/ neurological reasons. Hence I would suggest that you first get consultation from a Physician or Neurologist to rule out any physical causes for your symptoms. Now coming to the mental part, I would suggest that you keep a schedule or time table first and learn to manage your time. This is important as the memory loss could be due to overcrowding of your brain with many thoughts. Secondly, keep some daily for Exercises, yoga or atleast some basic relaxation exercises. These could not only help in improving your mental state but also help with your allergies. If the symptoms still persist and no physical cause is identified, I would suggest that you get in touch with a psychiatrist too to get yourself thoroughly evaluated and get the necessary treatment.

Alcohol dependence is associated with significant physical, mental and social problems. Physically, there can be liver failure, jaundice, vomiting of blood, passing blood in stools, stomach ulcers, damage to nerves of the body, swelling of legs, fluid collection in abdomen, and many more. Mentally, there is irreversible brain damage, worsening of anxiety or depression, triggering of psychosis and mood disorders, dementia, etc. From a social point of view, there may be isolation from neighbors or family, increased abusive behavior to children or spouses, legal problems, accidents, etc. Anti craving medications are available which will help to reduce the craving. Consult a psychiatrist with experience in deaddiction.

Dear Mit, You have to motivate him for stopping chewing tobacco. Apart from the bad effects of chewing tobacco, you have to inform him of health benefits of stopping. You should understand, it is not easy. You should appreciate any small efforts he takes to stop - though there are lapses in between. Make him chew only the betel leaves and nuts without tobacco. He can keep his mouth busy with cloves, elachi or cinnamon also. If he has withdrawal, assure him of nicotine replacement chewing gum. In 12 weeks time he will be able to master his craving. Keep giving him some gifts for reducing tobacco chewing. Show him the results of his medical illnesses's improvement like BP or sugar results.

Respected Sir, Depression is a medical or psychiatric diagnosis that can and should only be diagnosed after consultation with a psychiatrist. It is not just a sad mood that persists for a certain duration. It is a syndrome characterized by Depressed mood, loss of interest, decreased energy, easy fatiguability, decreased concentration, reduced self esteem, changes in your sleep, activity, appetite and also accompanies by depressive ideas such as hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness and guilt. There are many other components for you to be diagnosed with depression. Hence first confirm your diagnosis after a proper consult and then search for the remedy. However if its not depression and just a sadness, even then I would need to know the reason or triggering factors behind your current condition to help you properly.

The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks The common symptoms are (few might be present in a person with depression) Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort Changes in appetite — often reduced appetite and weight loss, but increased cravings for food and weight gain in some people Anxiety, agitation or restlessness Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that aren't your responsibility Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches.

Hello. First and foremost my deepest condolences on your loss. I would not say that it's common for people to feel what you r go in through right now. Because to be precise it's not. People get on with their lives even when their own parents are in dire straits or even. Pass away. I would just advice you to just consider what your mom. Would have advised you to. Do if your best friend would have to go through what you are go in through. Also it happens that we feel after a person who is so close to. Us as our own body passes away, we start feeling, we have no meaning to our life and we are just puppets in this big play called life. But I would suggest you to look towards the person who needs you the most. Yes your son. Just as you were inseparable with your mom. And she stood as a anchor of hope when your personal life's ship was shaking to. And fro. She steadied your ship. Same you have a moral responsibility to look after your son. Make it your aim in. Life to become a pillar of faith and hope for your son. Once you get a sense of belief to do something which can. Only be achieved by you and you alone then we get the necessary strength to withstand any pain/loss. I would suggest you to download a book called Man's search for Meaning. Read it. It has helped me and I hope it might help you. If I have been. Of any help to you kindly give your feedback to help me serve more needy people. Tk care. God bless.

This is all a sign of deep depression and you may have to consider medication. Before that, you may meet with a counselor and see if talk therapy works for you. You cannot live like this and alienate yourself from society. We are all social animals and need each other very much. You may have depression issues from your home of o0rigin and will need to address the same. You look like you want the attention by the extent of your wanting to talk but you are obviously not concerned about the other person's willingness to continue the dialogue, which is a sign of poor emotional health. Exercise, meditation, Yoga and socializing is very important. You must force yourself to do things in order for you to feel improvement. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Do you believe that the world is a hostile place and you are a victim? Are you the one who often doubts his or her abilities? If so, you might be showing signs of low self-esteem. Interestingly, self-esteem has nothing do with your actual ability or talent. Your looks, weight or skills are not responsible for your low self esteem. It largely depends upon the fact that how you value yourself.

It has been observed in most cases that self-esteem is often affected by a number of reasons, including ill-health, unpleasant memories from the past, and termination of relationships. Low self-esteem is generally marked in survivors of physical or sexual abuse, victims of racial discrimination or people who have had a traumatic past life.

If you don’t pay attention towards this issue, you might end up developing certain serious mental disorders. Low self-esteem is also the root cause behind the occurrence of mental disorders like borderline personality disorder, depression, etc. However, there is nothing to worry about it. There are certain simple things that are useful in building up your self-esteem.

Here’s all that you need to do to start believing in yourself and be confident about your capabilities:

1. Remember your strong points: Make three separate lists of your strengths; achievements and your qualities that you admire. Take help from your friends, parents and other well-wishers for preparing these lists. These lists will help you in understanding your abilities and goodness. You will be able to believe in your strengths. You must read through these lists at least once daily.

2. Be positive: Optimism and a positive approach towards life are the key to success. Your self-esteem is influenced by the fact that how you look at life. Life is not a bed of roses. It is unavoidable that you will have to face critical situations or problems in life. But, what is important is to face them with courage and a faith in your own abilities. Be positive and stop developing negative thoughts about yourself. Get rid of thoughts like ‘I am a loser’; ‘I can’t get rid of this problem’; etc.

3. Take care of your body: Your outward appearance sometimes works wonders in lifting up your inner-self and spirits. Keep yourself clean, trim your beard or hairs; cut your nails; don’t forget to floss your teeth and maintain overall personal hygiene to develop a feeling of goodness.

4. Sleep well: A good night’s sleep is essential for boosting up your self - esteem.

5. Eat right: A balanced diet is a key to good health. Eating the right food in the right way keeps your mental and physical health all right. Include minerals and vitamins in your regular meals. Avoid distractions like television or radio while taking meals.

6. Exercise: Regular workouts keep you away from mental-ill health.

7. Be cool and comfortable first: When it comes to your dressing, try to put on attires that you can carry well. Wear stuffs that you love the most.

Respected Sir, Even though I practice allopathy, I am aware that there are medicines in ayurveda also for depression. However I chose to reply to your query as I wanted to know the reason why you wanted to stop Ventab. If it is due to side effects, there are numerous allopathic alternatives available with fewer side effects and better efficacy than ayurvedic medicines. On the other hand, if it is due to an inadequate response, you are taking a pretty low dose of Ventab which can be hiked up for better results. However I would advise you to do the same after consultation with a psychiatrist. Also, both ayurvedic and allopathic medicines have numerous drug interactions, hence I would caution you against the use of both at the same time and once again ask you to reconsider shifting from allopathy to ayurveda.
