About two days ago I saw a red bump developing on the outside of my vagina lip, then within the next day it got much bigger and harder, then this morning I wake up and the bump has gotten semi smaller and softer almost feeling like a blister- then at school it ended up popping I guess and oozing. Please advise.

it may be a Bartholin's cyst.. That is a small gland which has a small opening which if closed by infection can cause tense rounded enlargement of the gland. But once the blockage goes away the gland discharges itself. Maintain hygiene.

Premature Menopuase - 8 Impacts On Female Health

DNB - Obstetrics & Gynecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
Premature Menopuase - 8 Impacts On Female Health

During the natural course of events, a women's body starts its reproductive phase with menarche and at about 50 years of age, attains menopause. This is when the reproductive function ceases and the ovaries stop producing the hormone estrogen and progesterone. In some cases, for various reasons including medical, the ovaries stop functioning earlier, and this is medically termed early or premature menopause. Menopause that occurs before 40 years of age is termed premature menopause; it is due to primary ovarian insufficiency and occurs in 1% of the women.  If it occurs between 45 to 50 years, it is termed early menopause.
Causes: Normal ageing, family history, genetic disorders, autoimmune disorders, toxins, and surgery are some reasons that could lead to premature menopause.
Effects: Estrogen and progesterone have a lot of beneficial effects on a women's body. Reduction in their levels leads to some of the below changes:
- Emotional changes like mood swings, irritability, and in some cases depression, especially in premature menopause.
- Irregular cycles before complete cessation of the menstrual cycles.
- General mucosal dryness leading to vaginal dryness, dry skin, dry eyes.
- There also would be urinary incontinence and reduced sex drive due to reduced hormone levels.
- For women who still would want to have children, infertility would be a big cause for concern. This could lead to other emotional issues, worsening the depression.
- Osteoporosis - Bones lose their density and get weak and are more prone to fracture.
- Cardiovascular health - Post menopause, women are more prone to heart attacks and stroke. Though not fully proven, this is believed to be true as the good role that estrogen plays on blood vessels is negated with menopause.
- Accelerated ageing - Menopause leads to accelerated damage of genetic structures, thereby leading to faster ageing. This also leaves a feeling in the women of being less attractive and less desirable.
There is also a good news, that after menopause women are at lesser risk of cancer - especially breast and ovarian.
It is not easy for women to handle premature menopause. The body undergoes some changes much earlier than expected, and it requires a lot of support and caring and comforting to come to terms with it - especially if associated with infertility or chemotherapy for cancer. Emotional issues of not being able to have children and feeling less attractive require frank talks to boost the person's confidence and increase self-worthiness.
It is easier said than done, but one of the key ways to handle premature menopause is an open discussion.

My wife is 47 years and she has entered into menopause stage. But occasionally she gets into" Light Period" symptoms. The discharge is light and lasts, at times for a day and disappears, only to show up after 3 or 4 days. Sometimes this repeats after a month when there is a small discharge and no further. What this can be due to and how to over come this discomfort?

Hello- this kind off symptoms are faced by most women in their early fifties due to menopausal changes in the body physiology. You can understand this by a simple example, as when a pipe is connected to a tab and later when you close the tap, the water output from the pipe decreases gradually and finally after dribbling it ceases completely. Still you can use these safe ayurvedic medicines- a) dashmolaristha 2 tsp twice daily. B) tab chandraprabha vati 1 twice daily.

Can a Heartburn Drug Cause Cognitive Problems?

MD - Microbiology, House Job Certificate ( SKIN & STD) , MBBS
General Physician, Gurgaon
Can a Heartburn Drug Cause Cognitive Problems?

If you check the recent scientific studies, then you will come to know that PPI drugs are treated as the popular medicines to treat heartburn troubles, but as the side-effect, you will face acute cognitive troubles. Your mental condition might get affected in various ways causing memory or concentration loss, decrease in brain ability and others. Though, these drugs are very safe but only effectively treating heartburn troubles, especially gastroesophageal-reflux disease.

How Dementia is related with PPI drugs?

PPI drugs are normally recommended by doctors for treating heartburn issues, but if you are taking these drugs on a continuous basis, then you might face the unwanted signs or symptoms of dementia. This is a hardcore fact and it has been observed by many reputed researchers of the present age. There are some commonest symptoms that can be observed due to dementia and some of the prominent ones are as follows:

  1. Beta-amyloid production: Beta-amyloid is a kind of protein and the growth of this specific protein increases to a great extent with the consistent intake of PPI drugs. This protein might lead to the increase in varied dementia signs, out of which the most severe kind of situation is Alzheimer's disease. This disease might get converted into dreadful condition at times and this is the reason a regular or consistent intake of PPI drugs should be essentially avoided. If you are facing this condition, then you should report about the same to your doctor immediately. This protein is very toxic or harmful for the brain as your mental ability is being adversely affected.
  2. Decrease of vitamin B-12: If vitamin b-132 decreases day by day, then acute mental disturbances will get invited. If you want to avoid this kind of condition, then nothing can be a better option other than avoiding PPI drugs. This is the only reason that doctors never recommend taking these drugs in an excessive limit. In fact, sometimes, these drugs are prescribed along with other potential medicines that can help in maintaining mental health in good condition. If you have got any family history of mental trouble, then you should reveal the same to your doctor so that strong PPI medicines are not prescribed for gastric troubles. In fact, there are few limitations among PPI drugs that are never to be prescribed by doctors and all the doctors should follow the same in a sincere manner.

Emotional Disorders and Their Signs!

Emotional Disorders and Their Signs!

What differentiates human beings from the other animals is their ability to express our feelings. While other animals may be able to feel and express some amount of feelings, there is a whole gamut of feelings that humans are capable of expressing.

We are all wired differently, and so the way we respond to situations differs from person to person. Some of the common ones include depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and anger. Let us look deeper into symptoms of these conditions and the ways to manage them.

Depression: There are days when we feel a little low, but those who are depressed feel helpless and hopeless in life. They feel like they are living in a black hole with no light at the end of the tunnel. Getting through each day can be overwhelming for them and theyexperience loss of self-worth, energy, interest, sleep, and appetite. It could be depressing to the extent that the person could feel suicidal.
There is always an underlying reason for depression in terms of family stressors, finances, employment, ill health, etc., and identifying the root cause is the first big step towards managing it. While therapy can be of big help, in some cases, even medication can be used to treat depression. Most people respond well to this combination and can almost get back to leading an enthusiastic and happy life.

Anxiety: People who are anxious are constantly worrying about what is going to happen next. While the future leaves all of us anxious to some extent, people with anxiety are constantly worried, whichgives rise to physical symptoms. The focus of worry and the intensity of it is extremely high, even for small things like keeping up with the doctor’s appointments. Symptoms include excessive worrying, excessive unwarranted fear, jumpiness, inability to cope with daily situations, constant muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, excessive sweating, gastrointestinal ulcers, and cold hands.

Insomnia: One of the major sleep disorders, a person is said to have insomnia if faced with the following situations:

  1. Inability to fall asleep
  2. Frequent waking during the night and inability to fall back to sleep
  3. Rising too early in the morning
  4. Not waking up fresh after a good night’s sleep

Any of this can lead to reduced energy levels, inability to focus and concentrate, irritability, and general fatigue. For most of these emotional problems, there is always a deep-rooted underlying cause. Identifying this root cause and working on it usually helps solve emotional problems too, which gradually disappears. In most cases, a good therapy session combined with medications can work wonders and get the person to lead a completely normal life.

Flax Seeds - Health Benefits Of It!

Flax Seeds - Health Benefits Of It!

With increasing awareness about eating healthy, certain seeds are now being considered as super foods. Flax seeds, also known as “Alsi”, have amazing benefits and are recommended by all nutritionists.

Listed below are a few benefits of flax seeds:

  1. Help in losing weight: Flax seeds are loaded with required fats and fibre and consuming a handful of these seeds will make you feel full for longer. This reduces the temptation to binge eat and results in fewer calories consumed during the day. The ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) fats present in the flax seeds have also been found to reduce inflammation.

  2. Maintain heart health: Flax seeds are almost phenomenal as the fats contained in them are unsaturated fats which are wonderful for your health. Because these fats remain in the form of ALA fats, they help you in maintaining and improving heart health by reducing bad cholesterol and retaining the good cholesterol. Thus, the chances of getting a stroke or an attack are relatively low.

  3. Flaxseeds are High in Antioxidants (Lignans): Amongst its other incredible nutrition facts, flax seeds are also packed with antioxidants. Lignans are also known for their anti-viral and antibacterial properties, therefore consuming flax regularly may help reduce the number or severity of colds and flus.

  4. Improve colon health: These seeds are packed with fibre and are very low in unsaturated fats. This makes them useful in improving digestive health. Also, the fibre content makes bowel movements smoother and reduces constipation and diarrhoea.

  5. Healthy, supple and glowing skin: Adding flax seeds to your daily diet is a great idea as they are packed with ALA fats and Vitamin B which help in reducing flakiness and dryness of skin. Consuming flax seeds regularly also helps in getting rid of the symptoms of acne and eczema and are proven to reduce dry eye syndrome and puffiness. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Since you have diabetes, I hope it is in control, because if not then other infections also will be difficult to control. As regards blood in urine and irritation, it appears there is urinary tract infection. Therefore, it is necessary to get a routine urine examination done with microscopy. This will help in finding out if there is infection. Plus you need to take a course of antibiotic for about 2 weeks. Along with that will have to drink plenty of water and also take an alkaliser, which will help reduce irritation. Plus see that your fasting glucose is <100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% < 6.8. Thanks.

Hi lybrate-user Am not able to understand the test you did. The only way to test if you are pregnant is by Urine at home or lab or Blood test in the lab. If in doubt, please have a proper test before it is too late. If you need help for PCOS, then that is a different situation, and will have to be handled separately. Please get a pregnancy test done and then proceed.
