Monsoons or rainy seasons is though a favourite amongst all, but it also causes a number of health problems.  So, here are some specific guidelines regarding what to eat and what not to eat during rains.

Nutritional tips in monsoon:

  1. Eat fruits as they help you restore energy. Apples, mangoes, pomegranates, and pears are best suggestible. 
  2. Avoid watermelon and muskmelons and also goosing on too many mangoes may cause pimples.
  3. Have medium to low salt food and avoid heavy salty food as they are responsible for high blood pressure and water retention.
  4. Eating watery foods like lassi, watermelon, rice, muskmelon creates swelling in the body. So, better opt for foods which are drying in nature like corn, gram flour, chick pea etc.
  5. Foods such as brown rice, oats, and barley are the best foods one could have in this monsoon.
  6. Body's immunity can be increased by adding a dash of garlic to the soups, stir fries and curries you intake. Opt for yogurt, curd and almonds in your diet instead of milk. 
  7. Drink only boiled and purified water to protect yourself from harmful germs and drinking plenty of water keeps your body hydrated.
  8. Vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes, cluster beans, ladies finger, kidney beans, pigeon pea, and sprouted grains must be avoided. 
  9. Eat steamed salads instead of raw vegetables as they contain active bacteria and virus that cause bacterial and viral infections.
  10. Have fresh radish juice to fight cold and cough. To reduce mucous formations add pipli and rock salt to warm water. This reduces the natural monsoon ailments. Better eat seasonal fruits as non- seasonal fruits get infested with worms during the monsoons. Pomegranates, lychees, apples, bananas are among the recommended.
  11. Avoid eating fried items, pre-cut fruits and juices from roadside vendors and stick to high quality and hygiene.

No, then you should definitely try once.

Oh what a relief if we drink mutkas/mud/clay pot stored water after a tiring work on a sunny day. 

Peep on matka water/mud pot water/earthen pot water interesting facts that one should definitely know.

How does the water stored in mud pot remains cool?

I have always wondered" how come the water stored in mud pot remains cool even if you place the mud pot in a place where it has sunshine. 

The mud pots have minute pores and when the water is stored in these pots, a small amount of water keeps oozing out. This oozed out water, gets evaporated after absorbing the heat of stored water.
This process is continuously happening, giving us the end result of cooooooool mutka water.

Health benefits of drinking clay pot water:

Let us now peep into health benefits of drinking water stored in earthen/clay/mud pot. 

*earthen pots are gifted with self purification of water. 
*it maintains alkalinity of water. 
*keeps water cool. 
*it improves metabolism of body.

Some tips to remember:

Keep your earthen pot germ-free, by scrubbing, cleaning and then drying the matka after each use prior to restocking it. Different types of matkas are available in the market – a small matka is easy to handle while the big one is hard to move around. Select the matka which best suit your needs and your comfort. The breeze will help keep your water cool, so put the pot on a sturdy table near the window and wrap a clean moist cloth around the matka for faster cooling. If you use a matka, keep it covered at all times to prevent insects, dust and other contaminants from falling into it. Never keep matka open, otherwise insects, dust and other contaminants can easily fall into it. Always filter your water before putting it in matka, as storing tap water (unfiltered) does not make sure wholly whether it’s safe to drink or not. Don’t put a glass directly in matka to take out water as it could contaminate the water, instead use a clean, long-handled ladle. Check matka properly while buying that there is no crack, otherwise water can leak out. A cracked matka cannot cool the water effectively.

Which is good food in daily meal, for college going students who have a very busy schedule?

Hi please give following details like weight, height, waist circumference, present drug treatment, level of physical activity, dietary pattern and if there are any other conditions present with diabetes. In this communication we are supposed to give only general advise like avoid sweets, junk food, deep fried foods and pastries, for exercise I would say diet plays 80 % role and exercise plays 20 % role in losing weight. Personal advise on gym. You should not make your body habituated with machines rather do simple walk or surya namaskar or planks. So only with healthy eating one can maintain weight.

Brown bread or white bread- Which of the two wins the age-old nutrition war?

Bread is a very versatile food variant and finds its place on most breakfast platters. Be it white, brown or whole grain, mass produced quality or home-baked artisan kind, bread is almost indispensable in modern Indian household. There has been incessant debate over which carries the most health benefits and nutritional value, read on to explore…

Why brown or whole wheat bread is good for you?

1. Whole wheat grain

Flour is prepared from wheat berries made out of the bran, the germ and the endosperm they in combination are filled with nutrients. Whole grain or wheat bread intake decreases LDL, or the bad cholesterol, it also helps you retain a healthy body weight due to low carbohydrate content and has a lower glycaemic index that keeps your blood sugar steady.

2. Smooth bowel movements

The fibrous quality provides you relief from irritable bowel syndrome. The bran and germ improves your bowel by increasing the bulk of stools, making it easier to pass through the intestines. If you are prescribed laxative medications all you need to do is have enough brown or wheat bread.

3. Nutrients and vitamins

Why white bread is bad for you?

1. Low fibre content

White bread is low in fibre, an essential in lowering your levels of bad cholesterol and checks the smooth functioning of your gastrointestinal tract. An average slice of white bread consists only 0.5 grams of fibre with the whole wheat bread providing up to 2 grams of fibre.

2. Refined grains

The whole grain is stripped of all its bran and germ for it to be refined where it loses all elements that hold fibre, magnesium, zinc, vitamins and minerals. White bread is made from these refined grains. Even though bread-makers attempt to add some vitamins back in, fibrous whole grains prove to be the clear winner.

3. High glycemic index

This index measures how rapidly food affects your blood sugar and insulin levels compared to pure glucose. White bread has a high glycaemic index due to which it gets rapidly absorbed during digestion, causing sharp spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. A diet comprising of high-glycaemic foods increases your chances of weight gain, type-2 diabetes and heart problems.

How to use bananas to melt stomach fat?

The festive season in India is a time to celebrate
with family and friends. But naturally it
translates into a smorgasbord of sweets, snacks
and a whole lot of tasty temptations. Even those
who maintain a healthy weight tend to gain a
couple of pounds during this season; the
overweight can put on as many as five pounds
or more, research shows.
How do you keep your health, fitness and weight
on track through these months and till the New
Year rolls in? Try these expert-backed strategies:
1. Make time for breakfast: Studies show that
people who skip a morning meal tend to eat
more poorly through the day and also
exercise less. Eat a breakfast comprising
protein and fibre; they will stabilise your
blood sugar and keep you going till mid-
morning.
2. Be realistic: Let’s face it. This is not the
best time to lose weight, not when someone
is offering you ladoos, kheer and ghughra
every day. Aim at maintaining your current
weight – that’s the only mission possible
right now!
3. Get your exercise fix: The benefits of exercise
are known to all of us. Stick to your exercise
routine – motivate yourself if you must – to
bust stress and keep yourself feeling good. A
moderate and daily increase in exercise can
help offset the increase in eating and
calories.
4. Never skip meals: Skipping lunch to
compensate for a calorie -dunked dinner is a
terrible idea. Eating regular small meals, in
addition to dinner, will keep your blood sugar
stable and prevent cravings. You’re far less
likely to overeat.
5. Eat before you step out: Before leaving for a
party, eat a light snack. A salad or a fruit
with a spoonful of peanut butter or almond
butter can curb your appetite and make you
less likely to fall for temptation.
6. Survey the buffet: It’s a good idea to walk
past the buffet table and choose what you
want to tank up on. Taking a bite of this, one
of that, one more of this can make you
overeat. Choose your favorite foods and skip
those that you don’t like.
7. Stay away from sugary foods: Rich sugary
foods amp up the sugar content in our body
and make us crave more rich and sugary
foods. It’s a vicious cycle so limit your
intake.
8. Take small helpings: That said, don’t deprive
yourself of your favourite treats. Think about
portion sizes and eat smaller portions. You’ll
find that small helpings of your favorite
dishes are far more satisfying than overdoing
it.
9. Stockpile fruits and veggies: Any meal
should comprise a large portion of fruits and
vegetables. Be it cucumber sticks, a mixed
salad, a fruit chaat or whole fruit, make
them a part of your diet during these times.
10. Mind your beverages: All of us tend to offer
and drink a lot of non-alcoholic beverages
during the course of the day and with meals.
But these beverages are loaded with sugar
and calories, and can tip the weighing scale
by inviting you to overeat. Don’t overdose on
juice either; whole fruit is way better.
11. Keep an eye on the alcohol: Alcohol is
fattening, but most of us tend to forget that
as the festivities begin in earnest. Control the
amount of alcohol you consume over these
months and try not to over-indulge. Opt for lower-calorie beers and wines when you can.
12. Compensate when you can: If you binge at
lunch, go light for the rest of the day.
Remember that an additional 500 calories per
day – or 3,500 calories per week – above your normal consumption can lead to the gain of one pound. Just one dessert can’t lead to weight gain!
13. Practice healthy cooking: Try and make your
favourite dishes healthier. Make brown rice
pulao , sweeten kheer with jaggery and opt
for fruit salad instead of ras malai . These simple changes will make an impact over
time.
