Rubella, also known as German measles, is a contagious viral infection characterized by a red rash. Rubella can be prevented through MMR vaccination of children. Signs and symptoms are very mild and can go unnoticed. Symptoms are:
• Mild fever
• Stuffy or runny nose
• Inflamed eyes
• Enlarged, tender lymph nodes
• A fine, pink rash that begins on the face and spreads to trunk, arms and legs
• Aching joints in women
HOW IS RUBELLA DIAGNOSED?
A blood test would help a general physician diagnose this disease. The test would help in distinguishing rubella form other viral rashes and measles.
HOW IS RUBELLA TREATED?
There is no way we can shorten the duration of the infection. Pregnant women infected with rubella need to discuss the risk to the baby with the doctor. Children born with congenital rubella syndrome need to be treated by a team of multiple experts
