BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE
Bicuspid Aortic Valve is recognised as a common congenital anomaly of the heart. The aortic valve allows blood to flow from the heart to the aorta. An abnormal aortic valve develops during the early weeks of pregnancy, which is the stage of the baby's heart development. Normal aortic valve has 3 leaflets of equal size or cusps with 3 lines of coaptation, while a congenitally bicuspid aortic valve has only 2 functional leaflets. Symptoms may include: • Child tires easily • Pale skin • Chest pain • Difficulty in breathing • Rapid and irregular heartbeat • Loss of consciousness • Enlarged heart • Heart murmur
HOW IS BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of the condition will usually be carried out by the cardiologist and will be based on a study of the heart murmur. An echocardiography can be used as well an MRI Scan. Also, a 4D MRI can be used to diagnose the condition in a more detailed manner.
HOW IS BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE TREATED?
Medications may include: • Angiotensin receptor blockers • ACE inhibitors • ""Water pills"" (diuretics) • Drugs that make the heart muscle pump harder (inotropic agents)
