How to prevent Diabetes

Prevention is better than cure, and this is the absolute truth when it comes to battling Diabetes

If you want to prevent Diabetes from occurring within in your family and friends than you should understand and remember the basics of it.

Diabetes mellitus is neither a singular nor isolated form of occurrence. It a group of diseases, marked by high blood sugar levels which occurs when our body is unable to produce and utilize insulin optimally. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and it is important to maintain blood sugar.

Common symptoms of Diabetes include

1. Increased thirst and Urination

2. Increased Hunger

3. Weight loss

4. Fatigue

5. Blurred Vision

6. Extreme craving (for fatty and sugary food items)

Uncontrolled Diabetes can lead to complications such as Blindness, Loss of Memory, Kidney malfunction, Fatty Liver, Heart Disease, Nerve Damage leading to Amputations.

Type 2 Diabetes is most common variety. it develops when the body fails to utilize the insulin properly and is most commonly now found in overweight children.

Here are 5 ways you can prevent it

1. Curb it young: Forget the myth that children cannot get diabetes. Today, children as young as 12 years of age are suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. Introduce a healthy diet routine for the children as well as for adults in the family. Children are known to emulate what they learn from their elders and thus it is imperative that inculcate healthy eating habits in them right from childhood.

2. Stay Stress-free: Reduce stress in daily life. Stress causes sudden surges in insulin levels.

3. Workout: Exercising regularly helps to keep diabetes at bay.

4. Say No to junk food: Keep Junk Foods restricted to once or maybe twice a month. These days almost all restaurants offer healthy but tasty options to choose from and therefore family or business outings can no longer be an excuse to indulge in heavy, calorific food that is devoid of any real nutrition.

5. Mind your weight: If you are more than 5 Kgs overweight, then please consider going on a diet immediately to reduce sugar levels in your body. Not only would you feel more energetic but also more ‘alive!’

You are a Diabetic! This news is not a welcome news but consider that you are one of the lucky people out of millions in our country who have diabetes and don't even know about that! Diabetes is one of the most controllable illnesses in this world but problem with our mindset is that we consider ourselves sick when we are taking medicines not when we have our sugar levels high! If you take medicines you will be absolutely fine! So please don't delay your treatment.

I am 37 years old male I have uric acid I want to know what to eat?

MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
Endocrinologist,
A high uric acid level can be caused when your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid rapidly enough. A high uric acid level may cause increasingly frequent attacks of gout, or it may never cause problems. A high uric acid level may also cause some people to develop kidney stones or kidney failure. And some people with a high uric acid level also develop high blood pressure, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, but it's often unclear whether this is a direct cause or merely an early warning sign of these conditions. Factors that may cause a high uric acid level in your blood include: Diuretic medications (water pills),Drinking too much alcohol,Genetics (inherited tendencies),hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid),Immune-suppressing drugs,Niacin, or vitamin B-3, obesity, psoriasis, Purine-rich diet — organ meat, game meat, anchovies, herring, gravy, dried beans, driedpeas, mushrooms and other foods Renal insufficiency — inability of the kidneys to filter waste Tumor lysis syndrome — a rapid release of cells into the blood caused by certain cancers or by chemotherapy for those cancers,Also, you may be monitored for high uric acid levels when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. Avoid protein diets, avoid more milk products. bad habits , fast food/fat/oily,salty foods. Coffee, smoking, alcohol intake. Non-veg., take whole grain, oats, green veg.,plenty of water in day time, 1 glass of water at night before bed. Take tab. Zyloric 100 mg once a day. Tab. Ulracet sos for pain in joints.

What is the best & effective way to cure diabetes?

CCEDM(DIABETES), MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician,
What is the best & effective way to cure diabetes?
Following are the tips to prevent onset/or control diabetes 1-Losing Extra Weight:-The most significant thing which can make a big difference to your health is to lose your extra weight. This will not only lower your blood pressure but also helps lowering your cholesterol too. For woman: waist of 80 cm or more & for man: waist of 90 cm or more are at risk 2- Constant and regular food timings :-the timings at which you have your meals should be set fixed and at regular intervals each day. This will considerably improve your metabolic activity and helps reducing your weight. 3- Split your meals and eating in moderate amount:-Splitting your meals into 3-4 times per day (including snacks)and eating in fair and consistent amount , improves your metabolic rate as the food u take is not concentrated at one time. 4- No long Gaps and skipping of meals:-There should be no long gaps between meals. Never miss out breakfast. 5- No overeating:-Never eat in a bulk on one time .Try to have moderate amount of food each time u eat. It will help maintain your blood sugar at a healthy level and won’t let it to fluctuate. Remember to eat your food slowly, chew well. 6- Proper Exercise and work outs:-Exercise is very important and a fast way to trim down calories, extra weight and controlling glucose level. Brisk walking for 30 min. atleast five times a week is the best and easiest way of exercising. You can also try Cycling, swimming, dancing. Timings for exercise should be fixed and regular. Avoid heavy exercise. Do not eat right away after a workout . 7-constant and regular timings for medication 8-Avoid fried foods and meat: Limit fats and sweets. Rather choose a variety of foods including whole grains, fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, low fat dairy products. 9- Take high-fibre and complex carbohydrates:-like oats as they are easily broken down to basic sugars. Add whole grain foods in your diet. Avoid carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, pizza , candies, and snacks .Instead include high-fiber carbohydrates like wheat bran, flaxseed and methi seeds to your wheat flour. This will increase fibre in your diet. 10-Drink enough fluids:-Keep your body well hydrated. Drink a lot of water that will help flush the toxins off your system. 11.Fresh vegetables and fruits:- gives essential benefits as these contain a lot of vital minerals as well as nutrients .Include sprouts in the diet as they are easily digestible and a rich source of nutrients. 12- Avoid excess salt:-in form of pickles/papads etc. 1 tsp(5 gm)is sufficient for a healthy hypertensive individual. 13-Avoid alcohol consumption:-Alcohols such as beer and wine contains large amount of calories. choose sugar-free drink. 14- dairy products :-Dairy products are high on fat content such as cheese, curd, milk etc. So instead consume skimmed milk products , low fat cheese, yogurt (curd) etc. Do not have more than two cups of tea or coffee every day. General Physician,
Cough is not a thyroid problem, need more details. You may have allergic cough/infective. Online consultation there are certain points which all should know and follow the description of the diseases should be complete in all respects, including any tests done and any medicines already taking. Just saying I have diabetes since 10 years and taking metformin or I have thyroid disease, cannot help a discerning doctor give a scientific advice.

Mr. lybrate-user, Your blood glucose is absolutely normal nothing to worry. But looking at your height and weight it is clear that you have grade 1 obesity with a BMI 30.41 kgs/M2. Your ideal body weight has to be 55 kgs. Therefore, if you do not want diabetes to come, then it is absolutely essential to take a restricted diet, avoid sweets, junk food, pastries, bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks (colas), fructose corn syrup containing products and also avoid smoking and alcohol. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Glucose is filtered in the kidney and reaches urine when it is more in the blood. A normal kidney threshold for glucose is 180 mg/100 ml. If it goes higher than that then it will appear in urine as kidney is unable to reabsorb. When diabetes continues for long time, then the threshold may reduce and more glucose will get lost in the urine. If diabetes is in control then FBS should be closer to 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. If you maintain blood glucose level within these limits then urine glucose is hardly present. At 37 years, you need a much stricter blood glucose control. Thanks.

Just One thing- need to have a little less calories at night time as your fasting level is slightly on the higher side though your overall situation is excellently controlled!

Mr. Lybrate-user, do you have t1 diabetes? or is it t2? the reason I want to know is treatment differs. You must be on appropriate treatment to control blood sugar effectively. It is essential to maintain fasting closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg and hba1c% <6.8. So along with drugs, one has to adapt a modified lifestyle. It means eat a healthy diet, avoid sweets completely, avoid deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, sweetened aerated drinks, fructose corn syrup containing products, high fat milk products and highly processed food products. Diet should give exact calories based on your ideal body weight (80 ks). Your bmi is 29.93 kgs/m2 (normal bmi <23 kgs/m2) which closer to grade 1 obesity. So it is essential for you to work on reducing the weight by at least 5 to 8 kgs in next 6 months. That itself will give a considerable relief. Refrain from alcohol and smoking as both are harmful. It is better if you join a gym and do workouts under instruction. Thanks for the question.
