What is Hepatitis A?

The hepatitis A virus is one of several types of hepatitis viruses that cause inflammation that affects your liver’s ability to function. The hepatitis A virus is found in the stool of an infected person. It is spread when a person eats food or drinks water that has come in contact with infected stool.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A-

Causes of Hepatitis A-

  • Eating food without carefully washing his or her hands after using the toilet
  • Drinking contaminated water
  • Eating raw shellfish from water polluted with sewage
  • Being in close contact with a person who’s infected
  • Having sex with someone who has the virus

Risk factors of Hepatitis A-

  • Man who has sexual contact with other men
  • HIV positive
  • Use injected or non-injected illicit drugs
  • Living in a household with someone who has hepatitis A
  • Living in a community or travelling to countries where hepatitis A is common

Complications of Hepatitis A-

Acute liver failure


 Diagnosis of Hepatitis A-

Hepatitis A can be diagnosed by a blood test called IgM anti-HAV. A sample of blood is taken, usually from a vein in your arm, and sent to a laboratory for testing.

  •  Careful hand washing after using the bathroom
  • Wash your hands after changing a baby’s diaper
  • Wash your hands before preparing food or eating
  • Don’t share towels, eating utensils or toothbrushes
