Benign Liver Tumor - How Can Ayurveda Help?

A benign liver tumor refers to the abnormal growth of cells inside the liver or outside of it. There are three types of such tumors but in most of the cases, the tumor is non-cancerous in nature and does not cause any harm to the individual. However, in some cases the tumor causes discomfort to the individual in the form of symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, swelling in the stomach, weight loss, weakness, nausea, and liver inflammation. This can be troublesome for the patient and it is also an indication that the tumor may turn cancerous in future. So, timely treatment is necessary and Ayurveda offers a “side-effects free” and holistic treatment procedure for the condition.

Ayurveda Treatment For Benign Liver Tumors
Ayurveda is a complete science based on a centuries-old knowledge that treats the disease by tackling the root cause but in case of a benign liver tumor, there is no exact cause that can be controlled or rectified. Tumors are abnormal growth of liver cells. So, the growth has to be eliminated and checked and Ayurveda does so with the help of herbal medicines. The medicines used for the treatment of benign liver tumor such as ashwagandha, giloy, milk thistle, etc. are loaded with healing properties that check the growth of tumors, dissolve them, and enhance the immunity of the body so that it can fight the symptoms of the liver tumor.

Effects of Ayurveda
The ayurvedic medicines are gentle to the body and do not harm the liver or any other organ. For example, ashwagandha possesses strong anti-cancer properties and it restricts the abnormal growth of the cells but it is not detrimental to the body in any way. Also, they protect the normal cells after a patient has undergone chemotherapy for cancer. Giloy is also loaded with antioxidants that repair the damage done to the liver by the tumor. All the Ayurvedic medicines prescribed in benign tumor work to check the growth of the tumor and melt the tumor, helping the patient avoid surgery and harsh allopathic medications.

Ayurveda Results
Ayurveda is a holistic and lasting treatment option for individuals suffering from a benign liver tumor. It treats the patient in an organic manner and this is why there is a lot of emphasis on diet. In case of a liver tumor, the patient is asked to keep away from heavy food as well as alcohol. Ayurveda is not about quick solutions but a permanent remedy that cures the tumor completely and also ensures no relapse after the treatment. Nevertheless, it is in the interest of the patient that they begin the Ayurveda treatment as soon as they are diagnosed with the condition. The earlier the treatment begins, the easier it is for the patient to heal. Also, the treatment duration becomes shorter.

Ayurveda is really a favourable treatment option for patients suffering from a benign liver tumor. It removes the tumor in a natural way without harming the liver. The medicines are effective in all kinds of tumor and cure the individual completely after the course of medication is over.

In case you have a concern or query, you can always consult an ayurvedic doctor for proper line of treatment.

Liver diseases such as cirrhosis, Hepatitis, Autoimmune hepatitis, PSC, Fatty liver, Alcoholic liver diseases, are not just dreadful, but they also cause irreversible damage to the liver. Modern medicine rely on transplanting the liver when its health reaches a point where treatment can no longer recover or stop its deterioration. So, a liver transplant is the way to go for modern medicine when there is end-stage liver disease. However, transplant is not a cure; rather it is an escape from the cure. An ailing liver can be cured through Ayurveda. This traditional form of medicine dates back to 1400 B.C. and has been tried and tested since then. The number of patients treated successfully by the way of Ayurveda.

Functions of Liver - The liver regulates most chemical levels in the blood and excretes a product called bile. This helps carry away waste products from the liver. All the blood leaving the stomach and intestines passes through the liver. The liver processes this blood and breaks down balances, and creates the nutrients and also metabolizes drugs into forms that are easier to use for the rest of the body or that are nontoxic.

More than 400 to 500 vital functions have been identified with the liver.

  1. Production of bile, which helps carry away waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion.
  2. Production of certain proteins for blood plasma
  3. Conversion of excess glucose into glycogen for storage (glycogen can later be converted back to glucose for energy) and to balance and make glucose as needed
  4. Regulation of blood levels of amino acids, which form the building blocks of proteins
  5. Processing of hemoglobin for use of its iron content (the liver stores iron)
  6. Conversion of poisonous ammonia to urea (urea is an end product of protein metabolism and is excreted in the urine)
  7. Clearing the blood of drugs and other poisonous substances
  8. Regulating blood clotting
  9. Resisting infections by making immune factors and removing bacteria from the bloodstream
  10. Clearance of bilirubin, also from red blood cells. If there is an accumulation of bilirubin, the skin and eyes turn yellow.

When the liver has broken down harmful substances, its by-products are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and leave the body in the form of feces. Blood by-products are filtered out by the kidneys, and leave the body in the form of urine.

The year 2019 has seen one of the major changes in the transplantation scenario in Gujarat. There was the establishment of sotto in January this year. After the enforcement of sotto guidelines, the liver transplant program is likely to get much more streamlined. The organ distribution process is going to be much more transparent and predictable.
Liver transplant is now an established mode of treatment for end-stage liver disease with a success rate around 90% in most of the centres. Patients from Gujarat are travelling outside the state to get their liver transplant done. During that time, they not only end up paying a high cost for the transplant but to stay there for two to three months is a burden mentally, emotionally and financially. Liver transplant services are already established and fully functional in Ahmedabad. There is a number of transplant centres providing liver transplant services by one of the most eminent liver specialists in the country. There are few centres where there is in house transplant team and the doctors are accessible every day of the month. You can not only get cadaver based transplant at all of these centres but also living related liver transplants can be carried out. Patients are likely to get benefit out of these and they would not have to travel out to other states in the country. The cost of the transplant for the family would then be nearly halved considering the cost of staying and transplant.
Patients who are suffering from end-stage liver disease, cirrhosis with repeated complications like recurrent ascites, persistent swelling of their feet, development of recurrent bleeding or encephalopathy or requiring multiple admissions should consult one of the transplant centres at the earliest. Unlike kidney failure, where one can survive with dialysis for years, for liver disease, one has a small window to get transplanted. It is advisable that such patients should contact their liver specialist at the earliest and get worked up for liver transplant.

Alcoholic Liver Disease And Its Ayurvedic Treatment!

Overconsumption of alcohol can lead to Alcoholic Liver Disease owing to the build-up of fat in the liver. It leads to scarring and inflammation and ultimately results in liver damage. Hence, the disease can be fatal. Since the liver is responsible for a mammoth range of tasks including storage of energy, filtering of toxins from the blood, making proteins, managing hormones, and regulating blood sugar and cholesterol, the liver damage can be fatal. The liver diseases are complex conditions which can be treated with an ayurvedic approach.

Different Types of Alcoholic Liver Diseases -
Some of the common types of Alcoholic Liver Diseases are:

Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: In people suffering from this disease, excessive alcohol consumption leads to deposition of fat in the liver.
Alcoholic Cirrhosis: In this type of liver damage, the liver gets scarred which means that hard and dead tissues replace soft and living tissues. People with this condition are at a high risk of developing liver cancer.
Alcoholic Hepatitis: Excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to inflammation of the liver. This can lead to liver cirrhosis too.

Symptoms of Alcoholic Liver Disease -
A person suffering from Alcoholic Liver Disease may suffer from loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, etc. These are the primary symptoms.

Diagnosis of Alcoholic Liver Disease -
There is no specific test to diagnose Alcoholic Liver Disease. Doctors go through past medical history and prescribe a number of tests to diagnose Alcoholic Liver Disease that includes blood tests, physical examination, ultrasound, etc.

Ayurveda and Liver Disease -
According to Ayurveda, the smooth functioning of the liver depends on the three doshas Pitta dosha, Kapha dosha, and Vata dosha. The imbalance of these three doshas in the body along with the five natural elements (corresponding to the five elements of the earth) lead to malfunctioning of the liver.

Studies About Effect of Ayurveda On Liver -
The effect of Ayurveda on Alcoholic Liver Disease has been studied deeply. Various researches have been carried out to determine the efficacy of this mode of treatment in alleviating the woes of people suffering from Alcoholic Liver Disease.

A study conducted to identify the efficacy of Ayurveda in treating people suffering from hepatic cirrhosis has found that it can be an effective treatment that may postpone the need for liver transplant and may gradually help in enhancing the overall health.

Take Away -
Though there are ways in Ayurveda to treat Alcoholic Liver Disease, it is always advisable to consult an ayurvedic liver specialist before opting for any medicine or remedy.

Liver Cirrhosis - Must Know Things About It!

The term cirrhosis refers to liver scarring due to various diseases and conditions such as chronic alcoholism and hepatitis. Each time the liver gets injured, it tries to repair itself, resulting in the formation of the scar tissue. With the progression of cirrhosis, a number of tissues generate making the task of liver difficult. Since the liver is an important organ of the body due to its functionalities such as detoxification and nutrient generation, reduced function of liver poses a serious threat to the body.

Symptoms of liver cirrhosis:

Unfortunately, cirrhosis doesn’t portray any conspicuous symptoms that can be easily identified until the scarring has reached a level of threat. Some of the common signs and symptoms of this disease include fatiguenausea, itchy skin, drowsiness, enlarged breasts, testicular atrophy, fluid in the abdomen, bleedingfrom the mouth, leg swelling, redness in palms etc.

Causes of liver cirrhosis:

There could be an array of reasons for the occurrence of liver cirrhosis. The major causes include an accumulation of fat in the liver, chronic alcoholism and chronic hepatitis. Some of the other reasons include cystic fibrosis, bile duct deformation, Wilson’s disease, hemochromatosisschistosomiasis, continuous consumption of medicines such as methotrexate, a disease involving glycogen storage and Aalagille syndrome.

Complications involved in liver Cirrhosis:

  1. High blood pressureCirrhosis results in slow blood movement through the passage of the liver resulting in an increased pressure on the vein that is responsible for carrying blood from the intestine to the liver. This increases the blood pressure in the body.
  2. Swelling of abdomen and legs: Portal hypertension can result in accumulation of fluid in the leg and the abdomen due to the liver’s inability to producing an important protein known as the albumin.
  3. Spleen enlargement: Portal hypertension is responsible for changing the shape of the spleen. Decreased count of WBC and the platelets indicate towards portal hypertension and cirrhosis.
  4. Bleeding: Portal hypertension doesn’t let the blood flow in its normal path. It directs the blood to flow through smaller veins. The veins, in turn, swell and burst to cause a massive amount of bleeding.

Apart from these some of the other complications involve jaundiceliver cancer, infections, bone diseases and liver failure.

Diagnosis:

Liver cirrhosis doesn’t get detected easily. It is often diagnosed with a routine blood test. Some of the lab tests that can help to identify cirrhosis include blood work to check organ function of liver and kidney. Your doctor might suggest other tests such as MRI scan, CT scan or liver biopsy.

Treatment:

Treatment for the underlying cause of liver cirrhosis is done to keep the disease under control. A doctor might treat you for weight loss, alcohol dependency, complications related to hepatitis, portal hypertension and hepatic encephalopathy. For advanced cases where the liver stops functioning, a doctor might suggest a patient go for a liver transplant.

Fatty Liver - How Homeopathy Can Help?

A number of health problems today are caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. One such condition is a fatty liver or collection of fat in the liver. The buildup of fats in the liver is known as Fatty Liver. The liver processes everything that you eat or drink and filters harmful substances from the blood. If too much fat has accumulated in the liver, this process gets interfered with. These fat cells cause inflammation of the liver tissues which in time can lead to scarring and liver fibrosis. On its own, a fatty liver is relatively harmless but when it reaches this stage, it can be life threatening.

The reasons for Fatty Liver can be alcoholism, incorrect diet, obesity, diabetes, or even excess use of medication.

If ignored or left untreated, many liver diseases will lead to permanent and irreversible damage to the liver and can be a significant threat to your health. But, there is no standard form of treatment for a fatty liver. If diagnosed in its early stages, treating the underlying cause can stop the progression of the disease and even resolve it. Homeopathy addresses the underlying causes of a disease and hence is an ideal form of treatment for a fatty liver. It can reduce the symptoms of this disease, improve liver functioning and even reverse the condition if treatment is started early.

The Homeopathic medicines, which are made of natural substances, are given to patients after studying the unique symptoms experienced by each individual. Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine. The selection of remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity by using holistic approach. Homoeopathy is very proficient in managing all the symptoms of Fatty liver disease and furthermore plays a vital role in preventing relapse of the condition. Some of the most common homeopathic medicines for fatty liver are-

  1. Chelidonium: This is often used to treat a fatty liver accompanied by right upper abdominal pain. In such cases, the liver may be enlarged and the patient also usually suffers from constipation or experience nausea and vomiting. The patient will also probably suffer from excessive weakness and have a desire for hot food and drinks.

  2. Lycopodium: A fatty liver accompanied by acidity can be treated with this type of homeopathic medication. In such cases, the patient will also complain of bloating and belching with a burning sensation. These symptoms tend to worsen n the evening and the patient may have an intense craving for sweets and hot drinks.

  3. Phosphorus: This is used to treat cases of fatty acid which triggers regurgitation accompanied by sour belching. In some cases, the patient may also experience pain in the liver and excessive flatulence. Vomiting may also occur along with weakness while passing stool.

  4. Calcarea carb: Obese patients suffering from this condition can be treated with calcarea carb. These people often have a distended abdomen, are lactose intolerant and suffer from chronic constipation. They are also overly sensitive to cold air and sweat excessively from the head.

  5. Nux Vomica: homeopathic remedy for fatty liver with pain in abdomen after eating.

Nux vomica is great for any abdominal problem including fatty liver caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. These patients often suffer from abdominal pain a few hours after eating with sour or bitter tasting belches. They may constantly feel the urge to pass stool but are unable to do so.

Though homeopathic remedies have negligible side effects when taken in low dosages, they should never be self-prescribed. If you suffer from a fatty liver, consult a homeopathic doctor immediately who can diagnose it properly and treat you accordingly.

What Are Metabolic Liver Diseases?

Dr. Goutham Kumar 87% (10 ratings)
MBBS, MS - General Surgery, Fellowship - American Society of Transplant surgeons
General Surgeon, Bangalore
What Are Metabolic Liver Diseases?

One can develop metabolic disarrays when some organs of the body become unhealthy and do not perform their functions properly. There are various medical conditions related to metabolism that affect the liver and can lead to chronic liver problems and diseases. They can be life-threatening, like liver cancer and cirrhosis. Alpha-I Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD), Wilson’s Disease, and Hereditary Hemochromatosis are the most familiar metabolic liver diseases.

There can be various health and medical problems, diseases, and disorders that can cause Metabolic Liver Diseases. If these disorders or diseases are not diagnosed on time and treated well, they can lead to Metabolic Liver Diseases. There are some common causes which show the possibility of developing Metabolic Liver Diseases.

● Wilson’s Disease: It is a rare genetic health problem which is caused by the accumulation of copper in organs like liver. This can lead to cirrhosis or acute liver failure. To treat Wilson’s Disease, the medical team will focus on reducing the dietary consumption of copper. The patient will be provided with a new diet plan that avoids food item with copper content like mushrooms, chocolate, shellfish, and nuts. The doctor will also provide medications to accelerate the copper excretion from the body. One might need a liver transplant if suffering from cirrhosis, which ultimately leads to acute liver failure.

● Alpha-I Antitrypsin Deficiency or AATD: Another genetic condition or disorder that can cause Metabolic Liver Diseases is Alpha-I Antitrypsin Deficiency or AATD. This AATD disorder can cause Emphysema in grown-ups and liver ailment at any age. In this condition, the body produces an excessive amount of irregular protein that gets accumulated in the liver. This can slowly lead to
scarring, liver cancer, adult-onset chronic hepatitis, liver damage, and cirrhosis. AATD is incurable but there are treatments used to reduce the complications of Liver Diseases. There are certain precautions advised to patients with AATD like terminating smoking and alcohol consumption. Sometimes, for adults, a liver transplant is an option to treat AATD.

● Hereditary Hemochromatosis: Another cause that can lead to Metabolic Liver Diseases is Hereditary Hemochromatosis. It is a genetic abnormality where the body assimilates and accumulates iron more than the permissible limits for the human body. This excess iron is stored in organs like pancreas and liver and can lead to liver cirrhosis. This excess iron accumulation can happen when the body gets several iron infusions in the blood. Hereditary Hemochromatosis can be easily diagnosed with a blood test. Therapeutic Phlebotomy is a treatment procedure used to treat the Hereditary Hemochromatosis by removing excess iron from the body.

Takeaway-
Metabolic Liver Disease develops when the liver could no longer function properly. There are a number of causes but the most common of them include Alpha-I Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD), Wilson’s Disease, and Hereditary Hemochromatosis. These diseases can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated properly and on time.
