Having a tight foreskin is a condition where the foreskin cannot be pulled over the head of the penis. It occurs in uncircumcised males and is a rare condition that affects fewer than a million people a year. Phimosis looks like a tight rubber band of skin right at the tip of the penis.

How is tight foreskin treatment done?

The condition of having a tight foreskin is something that can be diagnosed through sight and a physical examination. There are no other diagnostic tests required, unless the child is also suffering from an infection in the foreskin. If that is the case, a blood test is usually needed to see the kinds of bacteria in the infection and administer the appropriate treatment accordingly. Once the child has been diagnosed with tight foreskin, the treatment can commence.

The first step in tight foreskin treatment will be supportive care. Since this is something that occurs in children, you will first just be asked to monitor and report any changes you may see. With gentle and regular retraction, the condition can be resolved on its own. However, if this does not work over a period of time, then your doctor may perform a medical procedure to stretch the foreskin. This will loosen it up and allow it to retract properly as needed. If these means don’t work, then it’s time for medicine.

Your doctor may prescribe steroid creams to be applied on the foreskin. The dosage will depend on how tight the foreskin in and all you have to do is apply as directed. Can tight foreskin go away?

As mentioned earlier, tight foreskin cases rarely need medical attention and extensive measures of treatment, as the skin has the natural tendency to loosen up as they grow. But if the tightness is disrupting an individual life routine then here are some of the tips that your doctor may suggest after having a detailed analysis of the situation.

  1. Exercise:-

One of the most effective and natural ways to loosen up the foreskin is exercise. Even in severe cases, your doctor may ask you to follow the exercises. The procedure is used for both treatment and post-treatment prevention measures to ensure comfort.

It consists of a gentle and slow pullback of the foreskin, following by some motion to create room. It is recommended to the patient from a very young age and it can take place when you take a bath or clean your penis.

Note: Do not overpull the skin as it can create severe damage to the glands and soft connecting tissues underneath.

  2. Over-the-counter (OTC) medication:-

Ointments, creams, and oral pills are only recommended in the worst case of phimosis. Creams like hydrocortisone are commonly recommended steroids for tight foreskin. Read the instructions given on the box carefully and use it as directed by your doctor. Gently massage the ointment into the foreskin twice per day along with daily exercise for best results.

  3. Prescription medication:-

A combination of antibiotics and topical steroids is recommended to treat bacterial or fungal infection developed due to the tight foreskin. Medications like:-

    • Betamethasone (Celestone)
    • Triamcinolone (Aristopan)
    • Erythromycin (Ilotycin)
    • Miconazole (Lotrimin AF)

It is recommended to strictly follow the timeline of the prescription given by your doctor. Exceeding the intake of antibiotics can create resistance in your immune system, which makes it harder for the patient to get cured/

  4. Surgery:-

Surgery is recommended if exercise and medication do not show any effects. Your doctor will run through all the suggested methods of treatment with you before surgery, here are some common methods that are used to treat tight foreskin:

    • Circumcision:

Can be described as the complete removal of the foreskin through surgery. The surgery is usually recommended in severe cases of phimosis or chronic foreskin infection.

    • Preputioplasty:

This type of surgical procedure involves a less comprehensive surgery as compared to circumcision where the foreskin is cut and stitched back. The procedure is preferred only as it gives an appearance of an uncircumcised penis to the patient.

    • Frenuloplasty:

Identical to preputioplasty, it involves the surgical separation and removal of the underside of the foreskin making it lose enough for the penis to be covered easily and completely.

Physical Exercises for the people suffering from Tight Foreskin:

Physical exercise like gentle skin stretching can be beneficial and help you lose up the tight foreskin.

It is best when you bathe or wash your penis as it is well lubricated. Gently move your foreskin up and down without making a stretch to lose up the foreskin. You can also ask your medical advisor to know more about exercise as it can be harmful if not done properly.

Summary: If the skin above the penis is not able to cover the penis it is considered as the tight foreskin. A tight foreskin is not a serious condition, but it can be very discomforting, if not treated on time.
