The goal of treatment of Bipolar disorder is not just quick relief from the current mood episode but to be able to prevent future mood eposides. Hence treatment doesn’t end after the remission of current mood episode but it is very important to continue the treatment for a long period of time (depending upon case to case...but at least one year) to prevent or at least reduce the risk of developing future mood eposides. This long term treatment is called maintenance phase. It is important to visit ur psychiatrist regularly as medications need to be adjusted/changed according to the phase of treatment a Bipolar pt is in. It is a delicate balancing act.
