Hi,

I am Dt. Pujah Kundaar, Dietitian/Nutritionist. I have completed my graduation in homeopathy with masters in alternative medicines and masters in diabetic foods services management. I am a certified child nutritionist. And did diploma in yoga teachers training. Today we will be talking about sugar. Before we begin with it, I will give you an event which has happened today. I woke up today morning and completely rushed for time. I didn't eat anything and went around in doing my chose. After an hour or so started feeling giddy because I have not eaten anything. So, the first thing I did was grab a tablespoon of sugar and ate it. That gave me instant energy. That got me wondering about sugar. That is the reason I chose the topic of sugar. Most of us have heard that sugar is not good, not bad. So, let's understand what is sugar? Sugar is actually a generic term.

It is anything which is sweet tasting carbohydrate. Now for better understanding, I have categorized sugar into 2 categories. 1st is natural sugar which is present in fruits, vegetables, and milk. Then there are added sugar like table sugar or syrup which is added into processed food which is causing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease these days. So, you must be wondering when I am not diabetic, do I need to be really worried about. Well, you need to. As we all know that sugar is the leading cause of obesity. It is not about your weight. It is about fat around your belly. Most of the sugar is not only causing obesity but also causing central obesity. This is responsible for diseases like diabetes, BP issue, heart disease, leading cause of liver failure. Sugar worsens acne. Not only that. You also must have seen wrinkles, tired look on your face. It increases wrinkles. So, in the morning when I had sugar, it was not only energy. Afterward, I felt worse. Sugar increases exhaustion. It lowers immunity and put you at risk of recurrent infection. Many people complaint about dental cavities because of eating excessive sugar and that is the painful condition.

Now you must be thinking that how much sugar you should have. WHO has made easy for us and mentioned that in a day we can have 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of sugar only when we have normal weight and BMI. Now you must be wondering that I have sugar craving so how should I control that. Avoid packaged or processed food. They are high in sugar intake and highly addictive. So, whenever you are craving, have one tablespoon of fennel seeds and see your craving melts. Add cardamom and cinnamon to the desert which you are making at home. Last but not least. Learn to read packaged food. Read instruction or the ingredient written over the package. That will tell you how much sugar that package has. All you need to do is to make the right choice. Excessive intake of sugar has side-effects. All you need to do is make small changes. Be smart and make the right choice. For any other query, you can contact me through Lybrate.
