Stent: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Stent is also known as Stent Graft. Stent surgery is generally performed when you are suffering from heart disease, or heart attack or when you are suffering from extreme chest pain. The blockage may occur due to Plaque or any other reasons. The stents which are inserted to open narrowed arteries in heart are known as heart stents. This process is called angioplasty.

Stent is a metal mesh which your doctor inserts into your artery to narrow arteries and open the blockage. Treatment of stent can take about an hour and more if the stent is to be inserted in more than one artery. Your doctor will prescribe you some medicine that you need to consume before starting the treatment. Sometimes, emergency treatment is also needed if one faces immediate blockage. After the time period for medication is over, the doctor will start your surgery. The patient is required to lay down on his back and the body part where stent is to inserted is kept numb and the patient can even see the surgery being performed. Also, he/she is required to follow the instructions of doctor, so as to prevent pain and further complications. After the treatment is over you may need to stay in the hospital for one day or more, as per doctor’s prescription.

There are several risks associated with heart stent surgery. These risks are Bleeding, forming of Blood Clots, Breathing problems, Allergic Reactions, Kidney stones, Heart attack and re-blockage of artery.

After the treatment it is not favorable for the patient to indulge in physical activities or exercises, Further, the doctor may provide you with some bathing instructions. The patient is strictly advised to quit smoking, and consume a diet as per doctor’s instructions. It is also advisable to consult doctor if the patient faces chest pain or tingling or coolness or numbness or bleeding in the area where stent is inserted.

This treatment range between Rs. 30000 to Rs. 40000, more or less, is depend on the place from where you are getting it.

It is dependent on the type of treatment one took. It may sometimes happen that the patient may suffer blockage again and further heart problems too. But in many cases the result is almost permanent as it prevents and cures heart disease.
