Multiple Sclerosis - What Should You Know?

Multiple Sclerosis - What Should You Know?

Multiple Sclerosis is a condition of the immune system, where it attacks the central nervous system and destroys the protective sheath of nerve fibers. This is why, it is known as an autoimmune disease. It is a disabling disease for the spinal cord and the brain. If treatment is not begun in right earnest, the disease may damage the nervous system and disabled people.

However, there is no cure for Multiple Sclerosis in modern medicine. Doctors can at most reduce the pace of progression of the disease, but not halt it. Nevertheless, Ayurveda may have an answer to this dreaded disease.

Modern Treatment for Multiple Sclerosis:

Modern medicine focuses on speeding up recovery from episodes like pain in the body, electric-shock sensations during certain movements, tremors, problems with coordination, etc. Other aspects of treatment include slowing the progress of the disease and managing the symptoms of the disease. People who are afflicted with only mild symptoms usually don’t need any treatment. However, for those who have severe symptoms like jerks, slurred speech, etc., Ayurveda may be the answer.

Ayurvedic Interpretation:

In Ayurveda, the malady is interpreted as an energy disorder. Practitioners consider this problem as one arising from improper digestion. Improper digestion leads to toxin formation. If the toxins are not removed, they accumulate in various tissues of the body. According to the tenets of Ayurveda, these toxins obstruct the movement of certain energies. This precipitates neuromuscular disorders.

Ayurvedic Remedy for Multiple Sclerosis:

Ayurvedic remedies for Multiple Sclerosis involve removing the toxins and restoring digestive capacity. It uses herbal remedies for that purpose. However, the task of removing the toxins is a comprehensive one. The toxins need to be eliminated from the tissues and at the same time they need to be prevented from accumulating in the tissues. This can be done by bringing in improvement in metabolism. In fact, this is the touchstone of Ayurvedic remedies for Multiple Sclerosis. Ayurvedic practitioners use Aloe Vera gel to detoxify and improve metabolism in patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. Natural minerals and vitamins of Aloe Vera also help in strengthening the immune system and putting a brake on its autoimmune activities.

Lifestyle Changes:

While various remedies help to expel toxins and prevent build-up toxins, patients need to bring in a change in their lifestyle in order to bring in long-standing improvements in digestive capacity and metabolism.

Dietary Habits:

Stuff like green tea has huge potential in prevention and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases. In fact, a certain chemical known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate has the ability to prevent the T-cells of immune system from attacking the nerve sheath.

Avoid stimulants like alcohol or coffee, fermented foods, peanuts, acidic foods, etc. One should also avoid or quit cigarettes.

Foods that are helpful are whole grains, almonds, Chlorella, Spirulina, Ghee, etc. Eating food which increases the metabolism and digestion of the body will also be helpful for this situation.

Conclusion:

While modern medicine does not have an answer to Multiple Sclerosis, Ayurveda offers a glimmer of hope. Patients need to bring in a comprehensive change in their lifestyle that includes improving lifestyles and taking specific food and drinks that help in fighting the disease. One should always consult a doctor if the symptoms are visible.

Good Sources of Vegetable Protein.

Good Sources of Vegetable Protein.
1.) all legumes and beans: legumes (peanuts, soy products), beans (chowli, bengal gram, etc.) are good sources of protein. Soy milk is an excellent source of protein so is tofu which is fermented soybean. Avoid consuming protein powders as they are too concentrated and do not assimilate and digest easily.

2.) grains: all grains especially amaranth (rajgeera) and quinoa are higher in protein content than others.

3.) all green and yellow vegetables help the synthesis of protein in the liver, which is very important especially for weight loss.

4.) good quality fermented foods: these are easily digested as they have been broken down already by good bacteria, and are also rich in protein.

5.) nuts and seeds are concentrated forms of both proteins and fats. These include flax, pumpkin, sunflower, walnuts and almonds.

6.) spirulina (easily available online in india) is rich in trace minerals, chlorophyll, and is the highest source of concentrated protein.

Health Tip on Acidity

Health Tip on Acidity

Did you know that too much acidity in your body can cause pain, weight gain, fatigue, and other health problems? Or, that high protein “weight loss” diets can be harmful to your health due to their high levels of acidity? Even glands and organs can be impaired from excess acidity in your diet and lifestyle , here are 10 ways to conquer excess acidity to start feeling great:

1. Buy a Sack of Lemons
If you run only one errand today, make it a trip to your local health food or grocery store to buy a sack of lemons. Yes, a sack. Once you get home, squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a tall glass of water and drink immediately. This one step will help you to quickly reset your body chemistry.

2. Load Up on H2O
Drink at least 8 more cups of water throughout the day, preferably with lemon juice added to each. Lemon juice breaks down acid waste in your body and restores your blood and tissues to slightly alkaline levels.

3. Breathe Deeply
Take a few deep breaths. Oxygen will not only energize your brain but it will quickly help to balance the chemistry of your cells — and healthier cells mean a healthier body.

4. Take a Walk
Boost your oxygen levels even further by bundling up and heading out for a brisk walk. Exercise helps to quickly oxygenate your body. More oxygen in your blood means its better equipped to nourish every organ and tissue, which increases energy, mental clarity and moods.

5. Turn to Peppermint Tea
Instead of reaching for a caffeine jolt from acidic coffee, or cola, drink some peppermint tea. Research shows that peppermint provides a quick boost of energy that won’t send your energy levels plummeting a few hours later.

6. Eat Your Veggies
Make vegetables the focal point of your lunch and dinner meals. If you absolutely hate broccoli, don’t take it out on the entire veggie kingdom. Who wouldn’t enjoy some delicious mashed sweet potatoes.

7. Take an Almond Break
Snack on raw, unsalted almonds every few hours. Not only are they loaded with calcium, magnesium, protein and other important nutrients, their high fiber and protein content help to stabilize blood sugar levels.

8. Smoothie Nation
Enjoy a delicious smoothie instead of a sugary snack or breakfast. Start with some almond milk and add frozen berries, half a frozen banana and a heaping teaspoon of green powder like barley juice, spirulina, wheatgrass, or other green food supplement.

9. Go Green
Eat at least one large salad a day but be sure to avoid store-bought dressings full of rancid oils, preservatives, additives, and sugar.

10. Take a Cue from Vegetarians
Cut back on your meat consumption. Choose beans, fish, or raw nuts or seeds instead of acid-forming meat. Add beans to soups, stew, chili or wraps, or make them into delicious dips for a high-fiber, high-protein, high-nutrition source of energy.

Vitamin B12 in Vegetarian Diets

A Critical Nutrient:
Vitamin B12 is a very important nutrient. It is required for proper red blood cell formation and for the development of the nervous system. A deficiency of vitamin B12 is a serious nutritional concern, resulting in anemia and changes in the function of the nervous system. While milk and eggs contain vitamin B12, no plant food naturally contains the vitamin. Unless they consume a B12 supplement or foods fortified with B12, a vegan is at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.

What are the symptoms of B12 deficiency?
If blood levels of vitamin B12 drop below normal values, ANEMIA results. This may be followed by impairment in cognitive function.
Other symptoms include:
-Numbness and tingling in the arms and legs,
-Weakness and excessive fatigue,
-A range of psychiatric disorders including disorientation, depression, mood disturbances, irritability, memory loss, difficulty in concentration, and dementia.

Some people also experience an inability to maintain balance when walking, and a loss of position sense. Many B12 deficiency symptoms may be due to other causes, therefore, it is wise to be examined by a health care provider to determine the cause of the symptoms.

What are the long-term consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency?
Infants who are vitamin B12 deficient often display signs of developmental delay or regression both physically and mentally. These delays may have a long term consequence on the child, lasting into adulthood. In the elderly, neuropsychiatric disorders caused from a vitamin B12 deficiency are often irreversible.

Why are babies at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency?
A baby born to a mother who has been a strict vegetarian and who has not had reliable sources of vitamin B12 for a number of years is especially at risk. Unborn babies have a special need for vitamin B12 and this need may not be met by a mother deficient in the nutrient. In addition, the infant may not receive sufficient levels of B12 in breast milk, when breast-fed by a vitamin B12-deficient mother or a woman whose diet is not adequate in vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 deficiency may develop in a breast fed infant within 3-6 months of age. A child with a vitamin B12 deficiency may become apathetic, lethargic, and experience failure to thrive.

Can the elderly also be at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency?
Yes. As people age, there is a decrease in the secretion of stomach acid as well as a drop in the digestive enzyme pepsin. As a result, digestion of vitamin B12 from protein is diminished, inhibiting the amount of B12 available for absorption. People over 50 years of age may show neurological changes due to vitamin B12 deficiency. It is believed that a considerable number of elderly patients have neuropsychiatric disorders due to vitamin B12 deficiency.

How long does it take to develop a vitamin B12 deficiency?
Since the liver does store extra vitamin B12, and the body has a recycling process for B12, it may take an adult 3-10 years to develop a deficiency once intake of the nutrient has ceased. If one’s past vitamin B12 intake has been very low, a deficiency may manifest itself in much less than 3 years after cessation of intake.

How much B12 do we need?
Only about 2 ½ micrograms of vitamin B12 is required per day. A cup of milk has about 1 microgram of B12, while a cup of soy or rice milk contains from 1 to 3 micrograms, and a serving of B12-fortified commercial cereal has 1.5 micrograms.

Vegetarian meat analogs that are fortified may contain anywhere from 1 to 6 micrograms of vitamin B12. More and more vegetarian foods are being fortified with B12, but it is imperative that one read the food label, as fortification levels may change from time to time.

What foods are reliable sources of B12?
Milk, yogurt and cheese, along with eggs, are the only vegetarian food items that naturally contain significant levels of vitamin B12. Plant foods may be fortified with B12. These include rice and soy beverages, plantderived meat analogs, ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, and nutritional yeast. It is important to read the labels for these foods as not all products and brands have B12 fortification, and the amount of fortification can change with time.

What foods are unreliable sources of vitamin B12 although they claim to contain
a sufficient amount?
While claims are made for tempeh, miso, and other fermented soy products, as well as spirulina, some seaweeds, brewers yeast, and leafy vegetables, these foods do not contain any significant level of vitamin B12.

Can’t we make our own B12?
Yes. The bacteria in our colon make vitamin B12. However, the absorption of B12 takes place higher up in the gastrointestinal tract, near the end of the small intestine. Therefore, it is unavailable for use in the body.

Are all supplements good sources of the vitamin?
Since the body has a limited capacity for absorption, there is really no reason to ingest more than 10 to 50 micrograms of vitamin B12 supplement per day. Larger amounts are very poorly absorbed and wasted. For effective absorption, a B12 tablet must be dissolved under the tongue or chewed. B12 capsules normally dissolve in the gastrointestinal tract and are readily absorbed. Sub-lingual B12 sprays are also a useful source of B12.

Summary
Vitamin B12 deficiency is not uncommon. Vegans must be especially careful to get adequate amounts on a regular basis, preferably daily. A daily B12 supplement is necessary when B12-fortified plant foods are not regularly consumed. Nutrition labels on processed foods must be carefully studied to determine how much B12 is supplied by one serving of the food.
