Sleep Psychiatry - Know Benefits Of It!

Sleep Psychiatry - Know Benefits Of It!

Sleep is the normal physiological process of our body which is as important as respiration and digestion. Sleep is vital for maintaining our physical and mental health. Normal adults require 8 hours of sleep every day, whereas it 14 to 15 hours of sleep is recommended for infants and toddlers.

What are the different stages of Sleep

Every human has a natural circadian clock in their body, which is responsible for maintaining our sleep-wake homeostasis. The different stages of sleep include REM and NREM that is rapid eye movement sleep and non-rapid eye movement sleep respectively. REM is the deep sleep stage in which it is very difficult to wake up the person as this stage includes the sensory inhibition and all voluntary muscles along with almost all interactions with the surroundings are inhibited. Therefore, a person’s physical stress and tiredness also get relieved during this stage of sleep. NREM sleep is the stage between REM and awakening and here the person may have a sensory connection with his or her surroundings, but may not respond.

Sleep and its benefits
Sleep and stress have a very strong connection with each other. The best way to relieve stress and any other mental disturbance is sleep. It is essential to have knowledge about sleep psychiatry for almost all physicians as they face many sleep-deprived patients in their day to day practice.

  1. Sleep is not only responsible for relieving mental stress and depression but has other benefits as well
  2. Sleep is also essential for the normal physiological growth in early infancy and it is vital for the development of normal alertness, attention and knowledge
  3. It also relaxes our voluntary muscles and thereby, relieves us from physical stress
  4. Sleep disturbance may also aggravate diseases in our body. Sleep is also a state of recovery and healing.

Sleep psychiatry also insists on meditation and ensures that people have a normal pattern of sleep, in order to maintain the mental health of the person in a normal state.

Children - Important Routines They Must Be Taught!

Children - Important Routines They Must Be Taught!

Parents are responsible not only for the birth of the child but also for their well-being. For children, their parents are their first teachers, those who inculcate in them the right manners, attitudes and habits. Consequently, you too must be careful in deciding what habits and manners you pass down to your children.

Some of the habits that you should teach your children are:

1. Eating healthy food
Children always have the propensity to consume junks and avoid healthy food. It is the duty of the parents to correct this and teach their kids to eat healthy food. You must explain and elucidate the importance and nutritional value of eating healthy food. At the same time, the harm caused by junk food must also be brought to their notice. You should introduce multiple fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Eating healthy food is a habit that reaps great benefits in the long run.

2. Table manners
Children eating on their own generally creates a mess. Therefore, you must teach your child the right table manners. When to use a spoon or fork and what should be the etiquettes that must be observed while eating with a large group of people must be known by a child. You should begin to treat your child as a grown up as he or she sits at the table.

3. Regular brushing of the teeth
The importance of teeth is most acutely felt with advanced age. Therefore, it is imperative that you teach your children to take good care of their teeth. You must educate your child about the necessity of good teeth and see to it that they brush daily and twice a day. Brushing in the morning as well as before going to sleep is equally important and the child must be aware of it.

4. Early to bed
It is necessary for children to get adequate sleep. Therefore, you must make it a habit from the very start to put them to sleep early and see to it that they get sufficient rest.

5. Play outdoors
You must make it a habit for your children to play more often outside. Staying at home without any activity has serious repercussions like obesity and lethargy. Therefore, it is extremely important that children involve insufficient physical activity.

Does standing up straight from the bed in the morning or after a sleep is advised? Or should we sit for sometime and then get up. Can anyone explain me the reason of its right.

Does standing up straight from the bed in the morning or after a sleep is advised? Or should we sit for sometime and ...
Dear lybrate-user we should not stand straight away as one can experience giddiness and fall sometime, due to postural hypotension, so it is always advisable to sit for a while before getting to the work.

These days i'm sleeping more. So I want to control it how to sleep less and stay active all day.
Sleepiness can happen in some conditions like hypothyroidism. But few basic investigations are needed before we conclude. Also less oxygenation can cause sleepiness. Start exercising and you will feel improvement.
