Skin cancer - The 3 Types Of It!

Cancer that originates in the skin cells is termed as skin cancer. This is typically seen in people who expose their skin to excessive sunlight or those who have a repressed immune system. It is one of the most common types of cancer. Skin cancer can be categorized into 3 types based on their symptoms:

1. Basal cell carcinoma: This is the most common type of skin cancer that occurs in the outermost layer of the skin. It is very unlikely for this type of skin cancer to metastasize but is still considered malignant and hence should not be left untreated.
2. Squamous cell carcinoma: This type of skin cancer is also known as ‘rat bite’ because of its distinctive appearance. This type of cancer originates in the upper layers of the skin and cause open sores, an elevated growth with a central depression and red, scaly patches. These sores may also bleed. It can spread to other parts of the body and if left untreated, can be fatal.
3. Melanoma: Melanoma is the rarest form of skin cancer but its most aggressive form. This type of cancer originates in the melanocytes or cells that create pigments responsible for the color of our skin. It can occur anywhere in the body and is more commonly seen to affect light-skinned men and women. It can spread very fast from one part of the body to another and can be life-threatening. Symptoms of melanoma include patches or bumps on the skin that resemble moles. These are usually brown or black but may also be red, pink, white or blue. If treated in its early stages, this form of cancer can be cured.
