Runner's Knee - All You Need To Know About It!

Runner's knee or iliotibial band syndrome results in pain on the outside of the knee which is caused by friction of the iliotibial band on the side of the knee. It is also known as its syndrome or runner's knee.
Clinical features:-
Age:- 14-35 yrs
- Pain on the side of the knee, more at or around the lateral epicondyle of the femur or bony bit on the outside of the knee.
- Pain may be felt when bending and straightening the knee
- Tenderness or tightness in the iliotibial band which runs down the outside of the thigh.
- Weakness in hip abduction or moving the leg out sideways
- Tender trigger points in the gluteal muscles or buttocks area may also be present.
Positive:- Ober's test
Treatment-
- Rest
- Ice
- Anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.
- Electrotherapy:- tens and ultrasound may help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Exercises
- Iliotibial stretching exercises: standing stretch, Tensor fasciae latae stretch
- Iliotibial strengthening exercises: Heel drop, Clam exercises, Hip abduction, Foam roller exercises
In acute or prolonged cases a corticosteroid injection into the site of irritation may provide pain relief.
