Reasons To Keep Your Kidney Healthy

Do you know that your kidneys are one of those few organs that continue to work even when you don't? Your kidneys continuously purify your blood and remove extra fluid from it throughout your life. Therefore, it is very important for you to keep them healthy.

You can keep your kidneys healthy by focussing on some of the following points mentioned below:

Maintain your blood pressure

If you have high blood pressure (hypertension), then it is not good for your kidneys. High blood pressure can impair your kidneys. The condition is also one of the leading causes of kidney disorders.

Manage your blood sugar levels

In case you are a diabetic, then you should try to keep your blood sugar levels in check. If left uncontrolled over a long period of time, then high blood sugar levels can adversely affect your kidneys.

Be careful with medicines

Take your medicines only as prescribed by your doctor or as per the instructions given on the package. But you should also take note of medicines that can cause kidney problems in the long run. Such medicines usually include painkillers such as ibuprofen, HIV antiretroviral medications etc.

Keep yourself fit

Physical activity and nutritious diet can keep your kidneys healthy. Together, they are known to improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels in your body. This in turn helps in the upkeep of your kidneys.

Get rid of table salt

A diet high in salt leads to reduced kidney function. As a result, they remove less water from the body which in turn causes high blood pressure. Therefore, it is recommended that you shouldn't consume more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day.

Drink more water

Always keep yourself hydrated. If you suffer from dehydration, particularly chronic dehydration, then there is a higher concentration of minerals and waste products in your urine output. This can cause formation of crystals that can impair kidney function and may lead to kidney stones.

Limit intake of alcohol

Do you consume alcohol daily? If yes, then you should limit your intake. Alcohol can affect your kidney function and limit its ability to filter blood. However, a little alcohol usually has no serious effects. The recommended intake of alcohol is 2 drinks for men and 1 for women.

Give up smoking

Smoking is very bad for your kidneys. It adversely affects flow of blood to your organs, including your kidneys. Also, if you take medicines to manage hypertension, then smoking can affect their interaction with your body. But don't quit immediately as that can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

While the above mentioned measures may help you maintain a healthy kidney function, you must consult a doctor if you experience any kidney-related health problem.
