Ovarian Torsion: Treatment, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Ovarian torsion mainly occurs when the ovary becomes twisted around the tissues; the tissues present around the ovary are mainly there to give support to the ovary at any instance. Occasionally the fallopian tube present in the body may also become twisted and it can also cause the same problem like the tissue twisted around the ovary. It is a painful condition for anyone, because during this situation the blood supplies to these organs are mainly cut-off. Ovarian torsion should be treated quickly as possible. It is always a medical emergency situation that is to be treated carefully and quickly. Because ovarian torsion can even lead to the loss of ovary in any women.

How is the treatment done?

Surgery is the main method to treat the ovary torsion. There are a couple of surgical methods namely laparoscopy and laparotomy. These methods are followed for the treatment of ovarian torsion. The laparoscopic approach is different from laparotomy and it has become a suitable approach in treating ovarian torsion. If the twisting of tissues with the ovary is found in the diagnosis then laparotomy should be performed retain the functions of the ovary. The activity of the twisted ovary must be determined in hand before the surgery by visual inspection. To untwist the ovary, the surgery should be done for sure. Thus after the surgery the medications must be followed to reduce the risk of recurrence. Sometimes the ovaries are removed if it is found to be affected. The surgery methods are as follows:

  • Laparoscopy: A slender will be inserted into the lower abdomen of the body. The slender will help and allow us to view the internal organs of the body. Now the ovary will be visible and accessible by the doctor. The doctor will now use a blunt probe to untwist the ovary to make it function properly. Anesthesia is given prior to the patient before the surgery. Even the pregnant women are recommend to undergone this surgery in case of tissues twist with ovary.
  • Laparotomy: The doctor will make a larger opening in your lower abdomen with the surgical instruments. The opening is made in a manner that it allows the doctor to reach inside the body and untwist the ovary in a manual way. In this case also, the patients are given anesthesiology prior before the treatment. After the treatment, the patients are requested to stay overnight in the hospital for recovery.
  • Oophorectomy: The ovary is removed by means of laparoscopic procedure.
  • Sapling-Oophorectomy: The ovarian tissue and the fallopian tissues are removed by means of laparoscopic procedure, when both the tissues are found to be no longer viable.

Who is eligible for the treatment?(When is the treatment done ?)

The person who are suffering from ovarian torsion undergo severe and sudden pain in the lower abdomen followed by cramping, nausea, vomiting. If these symptoms are usually present in a patient without any warning, they are diagnosed and treated. The people who are experiencing nausea and vomiting without any pain are mainly need to be diagnosed. People who are in between the ages of twenty to forty years old are mostly experiencing ovarian torsion. Anyway, women belonging to all age factors from pregnant ladies to post-menopause are facing ovarian torsion.

Those who are not facing any issues related to Ovary blockadge and ovary related problmes can be opted out from this treatment.

Are there any Side Effects?

Side effects of ovarian torsion treatment may result in infection of the particular part, peritonitis, sepsis, adhesions, chronic pain and followed by infertility at rare instances.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Medications must be followed after the treatment. The prescribed medicines after surgery must be followed for better recovery.

How long does it take to recover?

It takes totally several weeks to recover from ovarian torsion. Mostly the doctor advice the patients to follow the general diet. Thus as it takes some weeks to recover from the treatment, the patients are advised not to go to the gym for the next 2-4 weeks. The patients can take shower after three days but are many are advised to take shower after 5-7 days after surgery. The medication should be followed as per the doctor's advice and weekly checkup is mandatory. Thus it takes about 2-4 months for complete recovery after ovarian torsion. Recovery time can change from person to person. It mainly depends on the type of surgery that they have undergone and also at the stage of time they had undergone the treatment.

Thus the major risk in ovarian torsion is an ovarian mass, thus the formation of it has been prevented. Pelvic pain has also been reduced for each and every woman who has undergone this treatment.

Natural treatment can be done in to treat ovarian torsion. Heat therapy can be done by a person to reduce and ease the cramps. Epsom salt can be added to water while bathing; it helps in relaxing your muscles and helps in ease cramping. Healthy snacks must be intake like almonds, as they are rich in magnesium and it helps our body function effectively. Ginger tea could even reduce the inflammation produce in stomach. Ayurveda medicines also play a major role in treating ovarian torsion. Thus the twist can be untwisted by eating Ayurveda medicine or by following natural medications.
