Moniliasis :Treatment, Procedure, Cost And Side Effects

What is Moniliasis ?

Moniliasis is a specialized infectious disease caused by yeast. It is also called candidiasis or thrust. It occurs in mainly four different parts of the body with a different name for each. It can occur on the skin and is then called as the cutaneous candidiasis. It may occur in the areas of mouth and lips and is known as oral thurst. It may occur on the tip of the vagina and in such cases it is known as a vaginal yeast infection. In severe cases, it may mix in the bloodstream and may affect the immune system to a great extent. Candidiasis isn’t a very dangerous disease in general but when it enters the blood and spread to vital organs or can weaken the immune system and reduce the overall efficiency of the body. The basic treatment for this is to use an antifungal cream or a doctor may prescribe an antifungal pill. These kinds of pills use chemical combinations of clotrimazole, nystatin, voriconazole, echinocandins or fluconazole.

For the vaginal yeast infection, local treatment may be given through vaginal suppositories or medicated douches. For some cases, the treatment may also be administered directly into the vagina as tablets, creams or ointments. In severe cases, if the infection spreads fast then the dosage may also be administered orally. If the oral thrust occurs then liquid suspension of the medicine is made that has to be swallowed or swished in the mouth three to four times a day. Some ointments may also be prescribed by the doctor to be applied on the lips, gums or tongue. In the systemic candidiasis, the high dosage pills of antifungal medicines like echinocandin, caspofungin or amphotericin B. If the severity of the infection is more, then a local biopsy may be done to remove surgically the excess yeast. A complete study of Moniliasis reveals that it is a very common infection that may occur to anyone. It’s not even deadly and all the treatments to it are quite cheap. The recovery time too is very less. It is required to maintain proper hygiene especially in the genitals areas than this disease can be easily avoided.

How is the treatment done ?

Moniliasis occurs in mainly four different parts of the body with a different name for each. It is aslo known as candidiasis. The treatment for the candidiasis is a very easy procedure. The procedure is quite simple. A simple and requires the patient to practices regular activities like application of the ointment on the affected area which heals the itchy skin and reduce the yeast infection. The cream gets into the skin and fights the yeast and then cut down its effect of the skin. For the vaginal yeast infection, some dissolvable pills are to be kept into the vagina that when left overnight reduce the infection. Antifungal medication in the mouth can be treated easily by swishing the suspension three to four times in the mouth that reduce bad breath and infection causing yeast. For systemic candidiasis, the treatment depends on various factors like age and health of the infected person and the organ affected. Blood culture tests are to be done for the diagnosis then the organ affected is treated with antibiotics for other specific procedures. In very rare cases if a biopsy is to done then the patient needs to be hospitalized for a day and then the excess yeast is removed.

Who is eligible for the treatment of Moniliasis ?

The patients can easily be diagnosed by checking for symptoms like itching, swelling or redness. A KOH solution test can be done on the vaginal wet mount. Also, the patient can check for specific signs like white patches on the tongue for mouth thrust, sticky whitish cottage cheese-like discharge from the vagina or cracked dusty patches on the skin. If such conditions persist for more than a week or two then the patient must consult a doctor or may get the medical tests done.

For systemic candidiasis, a proper blood culture test is to be done. Also, proper health may also be required if any particular organ feels to be affected by the infection in blood then a proper instant treatment for that body party is to be taken.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Due to poor dietary intake and unhygienic treatment to the body, the itching and ulcers in the mouth are very common. Also, conditions like redness in the vagina may also occur due to wearing very tight pants or synthetic material undergarments. They may also due to rough intercourse. So a rest to the vagina is to be given which will heal it. Also it the itching persists then you may try washing it with clean water and eat healthier. If the conditions of irritation and discharge persist then you must consult the doctor.

Are there any side effects?

The ointments applied if used for a long time may affect the pH levels of the skin and may result in skin coloration. In some patients it is reported that taking the antifungal oral pills can cause headaches, nausea, and difficulty in peeing, pains and sleeplessness. Other than these there are no specific side effects to the treatment. In case any patient reports any other complexity after undergoing the treatment the patient is advised to consult the doctor immediately.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

The disease is not very severe yet some important precautions are needed to be taken care of even after the patient has successfully recovered from the infection because it is can occur again. The patients need to wear clothes especially the underwears and pants of a breathable or skin friendly material. They should avoid items that promote the growth of yeast in the body like the consumption of alcohol or sugar substances. You must also get a bath daily. Brushing two times a day will also prevent the unwanted growth of yeast in the mouth. For keeping a check on the systemic candidiasis, patients must get regular health once in six months or a year. With medication, a balanced diet is also essential with a proper intake of water and juices.

How long does it take to recover?

The treatment recovery time varies from the patient condition to condition and differs from the mode of the treatment opted for the patient. Under proper care and medication prescribed by a registered doctor the minor cases of the mouth moniliasis and skin yeast infection the patient recovers in a week or two. In the case of vaginal moniliasis, the recovery is slow because the skin is not open to air which accelerates the rate of recovery. It will take two to three weeks. In systemic candidiasis, the affected may take a few months to recover and in rarest of rare cases, the immune system may become so weak that it may never be the same again.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

The cost of various antifungal ointments and pills is quite cheap. It lies typically between Rs 50 to Rs 200. It is easily available and affordable. The blood culture tests in India vary from one pathology to the other ranging between Rs. 1000 to Rs. 5000. If in rare cases a biopsy has to be done then it being a minor operation will cost about Rs. 15000 to Rs. 40000 depending on the severity and the area to be operated upon. Overall it is pocket-friendly and can be taken by a common man easily.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

In most cases, yes the results are permanent but in some people, the disease may be reoccurring due to not taking proper aftercare or may be due to insufficient treatment taken. It may also be repeating because of some allergic reaction of the ointments or pills taken for the treatment.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Other than the allopathic course of treatment we may use some home remedies in the initial stage of the treatment that may ease the irritation or may subside the ailment. Tea tree oil can be applied to the affected area easily. Eating and applying natural non-flavored yogurt is also very helpful in combating the yeast infection. Garlic is also a proven antifungal plant edible. You can consume raw garlic or may add its paste in the food. Also, a self-prepared vaginal cream consisting of garlic and thyme is also quite effective.
