The one organ we hardly ever spare a thought for is the liver. It this organ performs many vital functions without which we would not be alive. That is why the liver needs a little more appreciation and love for all its hard work. And if you learn to love your liver, you will take better care of it to prevent life-threatening liver diseases. So, here a few reasons that will make you fall in love with your liver-

  1. It cleanses your blood
Nothing would be more devastating than uncleansed blood flowing through your veins to all parts of the body. Blood does contain toxins that have been produced by your cells. But these toxins have to be removed or they will poison your whole body. And the liver can help with that. After absorbing nutrition from the intestine and before heading off to all corners of the body, your blood flows through the liver which sucks out the harmful things your body does not need. And then the liver helps expel them as either faeces or urine.

  2. Breakdown and utilization of difficult nutrients
The liver plays a role in how your body utilizes proteins. The form that proteins are in when they enter your body cannot be used by you. So they have to be given a different form. The liver transforms the amino acids of proteins to fats that are then broken down to produce energy.
But how do fats disintegrate? The liver is involved in this procedure as well and keeps the metabolism of your body going.
Metabolism is about utilizing fats to produce energy. Fats are not easily broken down. That is why the liver produces bile that allows your body to absorb fats.
The liver also helps your body make the most of carbohydrates- your source of energy. Carbohydrates too need to be changed before you can make energy from them.  Your liver is able to convert carbohydrates into glucose. Glucose is a healthy sugar that can power all of your activities. Your body stores glucose as glycogen in your liver.  So whenever you are running low on energy, it will send a signal to your liver which will release some glycogen to refuel you.

  3. Keeps blood sugar in check
Your liver works in tandem with insulin to regulate blood sugar levels in your blood. If your sugar level shoots up, your liver absorbs the excess sugar which will be stored there. That is why it is important to be very careful about your sugar intake because if the liver begins to store too much glycogen, it will lead to liver ailments.

  4. Deals with ammonia
Ammonia is an extremely toxic substance that your body produces when it breaks down proteins. But the liver can convert them into urea which is not as dangerous and that is removed through urination.

  5. Helps with vitamin D production
The liver can produce good cholesterol that converts sunlight into vitamin D- a nutrient that you need for strong bones.
