Can you recall a time when you are lying in bed or in a dark room starting at your mobile phone screen or your laptop? Maybe you have an email to send just before you head to bed, or you have to finish that last stage of Candy Crush before you retire to bed?

The light that is emitted from your phone or your computer is called 'blue light' and it is harmful at night. Let's see why.

Your Normal Circadian Rhythm

For millions of years, the sun has been the primary source of light for all creatures on earth, including humans.

It is rare for us to require any artificial sources of light during the day, unless we are in a closed space that lacks windows. While daytime is great for light, night is a different story. How many of you can recall a time when we did not have mobile phones, advanced electronic gadgets or energy efficient light bulbs (compact fluorescent lights, or CFL), and relied on good old tube lights or low voltage light bulbs to illuminate our houses?

Our body has an internal clock that makes it active in the day time and sleepy at night. This circadian rhythm is responsible for keeping us alert and attentive, and relies heavily on external light. The average length of one circadian rhythm is 24 and one quarter hours (24 hours and 15 minutes). This varies in people who have late nights or those who work night shifts.

Our circadian rhythm depends on the release of melatonin, a hormone released in the brain that helps us sleep. In the daytime, the hormone levels are very low, while at night they are high and help you fall asleep. However, if you are exposed to light for long hours at night by staring at your phone or computer or even when sleeping with the light on, your melatonin levels will remain low. This could alter your circadian rhythm, confusing your brain and keeping you awake for longer.

Blame The Blue

There are various wavelengths of light emitted from electronic gadgets and energy saving light bulbs. However, blue light seems to be the most notorious one. Interestingly, CFLs contain about 25% of harmful blue light and LEDs contain about 35% of harmful blue light.

In one experiment that was conducted at Harvard University, it was found that exposure to blue light for 6.5 hours suppressed melatonin release for twice as long as the same duration for green light. It also shifted the circadian rhythm by 3 hours. In another experiment conducted in Toronto, people who were exposed to bright light but were wearing blue-blocking goggles had the same levels of melatonin compared to those who were in a dimly lit room.

Another study looking at teenagers using their mobile phones or gadgets in the night found that just one hour's exposure to blue light reduced melatonin levels by 23%. In two hours, it reduced further to 38%.

Similarly, red light seems to have almost no effect on the circadian rhythm as compared to blue light. Some people even advise using a dark red light as a bed light as it would not interrupt sleep patterns.

The Harmful Effects Of Blue Light

So what effect does blue light really have on the body? Sadly, it is not just about it affecting one's sleep. Excessive exposure to blue light has now been linked to weight gain, heart disease, depression and even some forms of cancer.

Melatonin has anti-cancer properties, and low levels of it at night can increase the risk of cancer. In one study, women who worked night shifts had low melatonin levels and a 50 - 75% greater risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.

People who are exposed to blue light at night have a lower level of insulin production. This means that any snacks eaten when staying up late are not broken down into glucose and used by the body. Instead, they are converted to fat and increase body weight. Not just that, the low insulin levels mean that diabetes can be a complication of blue light exposure.

Dark rum vs. Light rum
There are many different kinds of rum on the market, but how do you know which one is the right one? the difference in taste between variations of rum can be very broad, but understanding the flavors of each will guarantee that your drink is perfect.

Processing
Dark rum: dark rum is usually made from molasses or burnt sugar and is aged much longer than white rum, often in oak barrels.
Light rum: to make a rum light, it is not aged after distillation like a dark rum but is instead bottled right away. It is also stored commercially in steel barrels, to avoid any contamination of the flavor.

Color
Dark rum: dark rum is defined by its distinct color, which can range from a dark amber to a blackish-brown.
Light rum: light rum is often referred to as silver or white rum, due to its traditionally clear color. It is often filtered after distillation to remove any trace of color.


Taste
Dark rum: dark rum is often either drank straight or used in cooking, due to the richness in flavor. Sometimes dark rum is mixed with spiced rum, which has various spices, including aniseed, cardamom, and cinnamon. A good number of spiced rums are made with dark rums, but not all dark rums are spiced.
Light rum: the flavor of light rum is very mild and slightly sweet, verging on tasteless. This makes light rum very popular for mixed drinks and cocktails, but not for drinking straight.

Gluten intolerance
Rum, dark or light, is usually gluten-free, but dark rums in pre-made mixes or spiced may not be safe for those who have a strong intolerance.

The alcohol content for both dark rum and light rum margins at around 40%.

Make adjustments in your workplace:

According to studies, it has been shown that half of people who work in front of computer screens every day suffer from eye strain. Not only the computer, but the entire lighting around your workstation may also be causing damage.

  1. Reduce the brightness of interior lights. Many offices have bright, fancy interior lighting. Use of light bulbs and fluorescents should be lessened.
  2. In case of the presence of a window right behind or in front of your work desk, more strain is imposed upon your eyes because of the reflections on the screen. You should change the place or use dark, thick curtains or coat the glasses with anti-reflective material in order to reduce the glare.
  3. The blue light emitted from the computer causes a great amount of eye strain. You should adjust the brightness and keep it as low as possible.

Improve your home lighting:

For people who spend a lot of time at home working, adjustments should be made to the lighting in order to reduce eye strain.

  1. Avoid reading in a dim light room. This can give you headaches and produce eye strain. Any kind of activity where a lot of focus is required in dim or poorly lighted environments causes damage and strain to the eyes.
  2. Use desk lamps, reading lamps, under cabinet lights in the kitchen and other types of lights everywhere you work.
  3. If you work in a place for more than an hour, a nearby light would make it less stressful for the eyes.

For people with low vision:

  1. For people with less power of vision, proper lighting is a must. A 60-year old man would need to double the amount of light to carry out any activity which a man of 30 years would require.
  2. People having disorders such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and similar vision disorders need advanced lighting and should consult a doctor for ideas on improving their home lighting.

The presence of proper lighting improves our concentration, our ability to read, and we can differentiate between colors better. Therefore, always opt for the best lighting to avoid giving stress to your eyes.

Although the menstrual cycles vary from a woman to another, the duration for a normal period is around every 28 days. Each period lasts for approximately four to seven days. The amount of blood loss in a normal period is around 20 ml to 80 ml. However, loss of blood below 20 ml can be considered as light periods.

The causes of light periods can vary for different woman. Some of them are:

- An imbalance in hormone levels in the body like PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease).

- Light periods are most common in women who are approaching menopause. This is because, at this time, women tend to produce less estrogen, a hormone responsible for regulating menstrual periods.

- Light periods can be common in girls who have just started to menstruate.

- Excessive bouts of exercise, a thyroid condition or an eating disorder can be also responsible for light periods in women.

- Women who use hormonal or oral contraceptives may also have a chance of experiencing light periods.

- An important cause of scanty menses is implantation bleeding. That means sometimes, despite being pregnant, little amount of bleeding can happen at the expected time of menses in the first three months of Pregnancy. So it's important to rule out pregnancy at the earliest.


Certain symptoms usually follow light periods. These symptoms vary according to the underlying causes of this condition.

Some of the common symptoms which accompany light periods are:

- Abdominal pain

Really ????

Many of us eat biscuits because they think that they are light, free from cholesterol and fat free....
Biscuits are made up of carbohydrates so they are a rich source of providing energy..
On the other hand if anything which is rich in calories is consumed by the body in excess, it gets converted in to fat and get deposited beneath the skin.

So have them when you have done some very heavy exercise like some mall visit (walk), some kind of stressful work like shopping for hours...
But remember one thing that number of biscuits should be 3-4 that too once a week (any biscuit even if it is wheat biscuits).
