HI!

I am Dr. Yukti Wadhawan, infertility specialist and gynaecologist from Delhi. Today we'll talk about anaemia. So, what is anaemia? It is a medical disorder that is characterized by a deficiency of haemoglobin and red blood cells in our blood. Haemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen to various tissues and cells of the body which results in the proper functioning of different organs of our body. So, what are the different types of anaemia? The most common is iron deficiency anaemia. This is found in most of our young women of the reproductive age group. In this, deficiency of iron results in insufficient oxygen and that is responsible for adverse effects on different organs of our body. So in pregnancy, if the woman has anaemia, this results in prematurity or low birth weight babies.

Second most common is folate deficiency. This causes neural tube defects in the foetus; that is the reason the expecting mothers, all girls are advised to take folate acid supplements or food that is rich in folic acid like green leafy vegetables, bananas. Third most common is vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia. Vitamin B12 is responsible for production of RBCs in our blood. Vitamin B12 is mostly found in poultry and meat; that is why in vegetarians this is the most common anaemia that is found. So, what are the common symptoms that are seen? First is breathlessness or difficulty in breathing doing the routine activities. Second is fatigue or tiredness doing household work or routine office work. Third might be lack of concentration. This would be found in children who are studying, school going or college students. Then at times patient also complains of pain in chest or dizziness. If you encounter any of these symptoms please see a doctor at the earliest and feel free to contact us on the address given below.
